If this was my dad and he decided honesty was better than $50,000 I'd be pretty upset.

Integrity or not that $50 k could have helped those kids future in a big way.

Part of this is the prize payout would be based on a few factors. The key ones I see are:

- Number of people entering the draw.
- Size of the opening
- Likelyhood that the person drawn for the shot would be a good hockey player.

In this case they drew a name of a person who wans't going to have a good shot, and then somebody who was a better shot made the attempt. I agree with what was said earlier- if they had said something before it may not have been such a big deal.

You have it backwards, the kid with the "better" shot had his name on the tickets but left and the kid with the worse shot took the shot.

I thought the article said the kid who had his name on the ticket just got out of a cast, so his brother took it.

That to me says the kid with the better shot took the shot.

No, the kid with the better shot was selected to be on all the tickets (as opposed to splitting them up between the two boys). He left earlier and the kid who just got the cast off had to shoot in his place.

Bingo. It's easy to go on the internet and take his hard-line angelic stance on morality, but when it's something ridiculously insignificant as this and is in no way an attempt to defraud anyone I think that $50k paying for their college education is a lot more valuable.

I think the guy is smart to return the money (or acknowledge the situation before the cheque is sent). Seriously, if the dad trusts his 11 year old boys to keep this a secret, he's stupid for two reasons

1) Teaching your kids to lie is pretty bad parenting
2) They're kids. They're going to tell someone. And that someone is going to tell someone else, and eventually, this could come back to bite them in the ass legally, especially in the USA.

I suspect that media pressure might help them get the $50K.

I think you forgot to read the part where they are dealing with insurance companies. They will not pay if they don't have to period. If they do pay it's because they have no choice.
