If you are taking nominations I think don't buy pop from the liquor store should make the top 10.

But about the littering butts...Can we also add spitting to the list? Why do people need to spit on the sidewalk?

Edit: Haha just saw this same thing in the GMG thread.

I would assume that you throw nothing else out your window.

I guess it is easier than using an ashtray or a glass bottle. Is that the issue?

Is it because then you are able to see the volume you smoke?

Serious question

I can pretty much guarantee that "Seeing how much you smoke" isn't the issue. I recall having a friend use a KFC bucket as an ashtray. Even as a (then) smoker it was disgusting, but it had no tangible effect of the behavior.

Honestly, I suspect most people* don't want their vehicle to stink of cigarette butts. Some people don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke, but the smell of stale butts in pretty much universally despised.

*the rest are just pricks.

Reminds me of the scene in Me, Myself, and Irene when Hank confronts the baseball player at the gas station when he flicks his cigarette butt on the ground.

"Hey ringworm..."

Because as disgusting as smoking may be, having a bunch of discarded, soggy ciggarettes staring you in the face from your cup holder is much more disgusting, at least to me.

I no longer smoke, but with the new wave of trying to get people to quit smoking I've noticed a reduced number of ashtrays around for smokers to ditch their butts, and if cities are not going to convinience me, then I'm not going to return the favour by stomping out a butt and picking it up afterwards.

Around office buildings downtown there is a noticable lack of ashtrays. This is smokers contribution to society, they keep someone employed with the little broom and dust bin that goes around and sweeps them up.

Building managers seems to have come to terms with the fact that if they supply an ashtry they will still have to sweep up butts so I think they have just done away with the ashtray!

I live in a townhome and have one of the corner units that backs onto a dead end lane. Because of this people from my complex will go out and smoke in the lane, with the smoke smell going in through my windows and into my home. If smokers don't want the smoke smell in their own home, why would they think I would want their smell in my home? Then they throw the butt on the ground, sometimes not fully out, and the remaining smell wafts into my house. I've asked them to stop, but it still continues.

There are plenty of ashtrays. There is probably at least 1 around 99% of the buildings, the problem is people don't care and it's easier to throw it on the ground.

Unfortunately that's not their problem. You don't own outside. If you don't like it then just close your windows. I don't mean to be crass, but it's the reality of the situation.

I like the part where I find cigarette butts in my lawn or on the boulevard adjacent to my fence. There used to be people who lived across the street who would empty their car's ashtray once a week by opening the door and dumping it on the street or my lawn.

It really has nothing to do with whether I think smoking is disgusting, though. I feel the same way about the neighbor who dumps gum wrappers and napkins out his window too. It's about being inconsiderate and disrespectful. Take 10 seconds and put the garbage where it goes.

Its a leading indicator of other issues that if you followed them around long enough you would see come to light and to them this is minor. It is only major when you burn a forest or condo complex down and even then I am not sure there is much consequence. You always think people will think and change bad habits but not surprisingly that is asking a bit much. I guess you could try the approach of getting out of your car and picking it up and throwing it back at them and telling them that they dropped something. Let us know how it goes

The "it's okay someone else will clean it up" defense stopped working when I was ten. Surely it doesn't apply to your adult life either.

I'm not sure if irony is the right word here, but there's a sense that these people don't smoke near their own apartments for a reason. If it's because they don't like the smell, then why would it be okay in their world to smoke near someone else's home and possibly make their place smell like smoke?

If you accept the premise that smoking smells gross and you don't want your place to smell like smoke, then there are only two logical conclusions you can reach about squiggs' neighbors. They are either oblivious to how their actions affect others or they just don't give a crap.

Maybe it isn't an awareness issue but more of an ignorance issue as many in this thread have shown. Maybe that is why whenever a house burns down people always say....must have been smoking? and it is hard to feel too sorry for them when it is

Smokers who believe the world is their ashtray definitely grinds my gears. Throwing a butt out the window so 'your car won't smell'...really? You think your car doesn't smell like smoke already? You are ok destroying your lungs but god forbid you make the ashtray in you car dirty. It really is comical that a smoker can be more concerned about the state of their car ashtray then their own lungs.
