The kickoff is at 2am tonight/tomorrow morning! It looks like TSN is showing most of the games during the day again though, so we can see these things at reasonable times. I'm really looking forward to this though. It will be some awesome rugby and a great event!

If theres a decently timed replay, anyone interested in maybe hitting up Pete's?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Absolutely!!
I see my youtube didn't work
It was supposed to be the haka which I thought was both fitting and exciting! If anyone likes that kind of thing you can watch the Haka and then Tonga does a similar war dance (Sipi Tau IIRC) at the beginning of the game tonight/tomorrow.

Rather than sports, maybe Broadway Musicals are more your thing.

Unless it is performed like this:
The All Blacks haven't lost a test match at Eden Park since 1994, and they won the only other World Cup to be hosted in NZ in 1987. I'm happy they've lost the Tri-Nations coming in, as it should help keep their confidence in check.
Does anyone know if any pubs will be showing games live at the business end of the competition? Limericks showed the games last World Cup, but the games weren't at 2am.
The NZ Haka (that one in particular as they have another they've done from time to time) is so awesome! NZ looked decent, but Tonga held their own especially in the 2nd half. Canada had better be prepared for a grinding forward pack come Wednesday.
Scotland scraped by Romania, and kicking off now is Namibia v. Fiji. I played with a Namibian national team guy, so even though they are total underdogs I'll pull for them!
So um... does anyone actually know the rules of rugby? If so would they mind explaining? I was watching bits and pieces of the Japan vs. France game, and it seemed like football without pads, downs, or forward passes

It's probably too complex for anyone to just explain in a single post, so your homework is to go find out what a scrum, a ruck, a maul, and a lineout are and when they occur, and the rest should just fall into place after watching for a while. It might help you to find out what the positions are and what their general duties are too.

Ya its a lot to explain. Football is derived from rugby though, its just that rugby doesn't have the constant stoppages and its more continuous. You can't throw the ball forward at all, otherwise there is a scrum and the other team puts the ball in.
A try is like a touchdown and the ball actually has to be touched down. They are worth 5 pts. The conversion is kicked on the same line as the ball is touched down as far out as the kicker prefers. This is why you see players try to touch the ball down closer to the posts if given a chance. The conversion is worth two points.
Drop goals and penalties are worth three points. A drop goal is when a player drops the ball and it bounces and is kicked at the same time, and it goes through the uprights. You don't see tons of those, but they aren't incredibly rare either. When a penalty is awarded its up to the team receiving the advantage what they would like. They can just tap the ball to their foot and run, have a scrum or kick the ball. If they kick for goal then that is the 3 point kick. They might kick for touch (kick out of bounds) and throw the ball in where it went out.
Penalties are awarded for a number of things, but the most common are offsides, holding the ball on the ground and holding the tackled player on the ground or intentionally collapsing a scrum. There are others, but off the top of my head I would say these are the most common.
The kicking in general is a little more complex. If you are behind your own 22 metre line and kick the ball straight out of bounds the other team gets the ball where it went out. If you are past the 22 though it comes back to where you kicked it...so players either don't kick there or try to get it to bounce out. I started to talk about offsides here....but changed my mind.
If you're interested in how offside works and such maybe post again and I can explain it (gladly!). Otherwise I'll leave it at that for now. Its a great game though, and you have the gist of it when you compare it to football!

I didn't watch all of this but it seems to do a decent job of explaining. I played a looong time ago and some of the rules are a bit fuzzy for me too heh.
