Yeah, it's homeless people or recent releases from the Police holding center across the street using the internet to look at porn and visit adult friend finder.

It's where the homeless go bathe and use the facilities.

Well I'm not sure how serious these replies were meant to be, but if you've been paying attention to what's been happening in the East Village lately, you'd realize it's not the same place as it was 5 to 10 years ago. I'm not saying the old problems have disappeared, but I am saying they have probably been moved to a different part of the city.
The East Village was almost completely demolished and now with upgraded infrastructure and planning, many new projects are coming to light. I think in 5 to 10 years, you'll see that area as perhaps the most vibrant in Calgary.
The Riverwalk, the Cantos Music Center, new condos, and the new 6th Street underpass connecting the area to Victoria Park and the Stampede grounds, I think the East Village will be awesome to watch grow in the next few years.
The library going in this area is ideal, IMO.
One thing brought to light in the article I was unaware of was the extension of the Stephen Ave. walk into the East Village. That is one more thing that will help connect the East Village to the rest of the core, something it has lacked in past decades.

There's also planning in the works to restore the long-broken Stephen Avenue pedestrian link through City Hall that was originally supposed to be preserved when the blue glassy complex was built in the 1980s.

Wait, what? How?

But seriously, I would love to see plans on how they will make this happen. Having Stephen Ave connect directly to the East Village project will be incredible.

It's strange though. I thought books would be old school enough to make him happy, but obviously not!

I just went for a spin and drove through there... I was going to start a thread about what's going on in there, but I guess this one works just fine.
It's pretty neat what's going on in there. The streets are pattern stamp to give it a euro old school look. There are so many sites just waiting to begin construction... I can't wait to see what it's going to look like down there. That's some seriously prime real estate, and it's awesome to see the city reclaim it. That area is going to be the next Kensington. I can't wait until they create an East Village Festival to piss off all the killjoys.

There are two condo projects that will begin marketing either late this year or early next year on the lands sold by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation to developers.
Embassy Bosa
And FRAM + SLOKKER (still a concept drawing)
Both unsurprisingly are on the most prime land along the river. Above you can see a future building amongst all these - this piece is privately owned and I suppose will be developed in the future.
Another really exciting project is the St. Patrick's Island rejuvenation - $20 million to turn that park into as much of an attraction as Prince's Island. Will include a beach! Also, the new bridge to access this new park:

I'm really excited for the East Village project to come to fruition. Like 4x4 I was actually around that area today. Headed down to the Crossroads Market this afternoon and took a turn around the roads laid out there. With the Stephen Ave link (somehow) added to this it should make for a wonderful part of the city.

I'm a big fan the St Patrick's bridge design. This is going to be an exciting destination, once it's all set up.
I believe in the continued relevance and value of public libraries. Glad to see that they're getting the funding to make it into something great.

Did they get their ideas for names at Ikea?
Was there today with my kid watching the C-train crossing signals and it's weird how open it is. Going to be a huge change like it was when they knocked everything down. Dunno if I would have done what I did today a few years ago there.

Bumping for update. Funding and location have been approved. Funding is higher than originally stated but it looks like it will be an arts hub of sorts. Good stuff.

A new central library in East Village will cost between $225 million and $250 million — although with a site finally selected, there will be a major push to expand the project to include a museum, theatre and gallery.

This is great news for downtown and the East Village. Extending Stephen Avenue east past City Hall is a terrific idea. Foot traffic by having the library, condos, restaurants, businesses etc. will reduce crime and transform it to a desirable area again. It's worked well for Victoria Park and will do the same for East Village.

It looks from the overhead shots that if you extend stephen avenue through city hall and then another block further, it intersects with the 'riff', which essentially makes a pedestrian avenue extending from central downtown right to St. Patrick Island. That'll be an excellent feature.
