Chicken on the Way used to be good. It used to look like this:
Then they switched to some non transfat oil when there was that big hubub about transfats (nobody seems to care anymore) and everything went dry and stale tasting. I haven't liked their chicken since and even their fries and corn fritters which used to be great only seem passable. With the old oil, everything had a nice caramelization and maillard reaction thing going on. Now everything just tastes either undercooked or burnt and the meat is very dry.

Of all the times I've been to Chicken on the Way, I'm not sure I ever had the chicken.
The rule was always: one corn fritter for me, one corn fritter for passing car; one corn fritter for me, one for passing car; one for me, one for car.
Most entertaining 3 bucks you could blow on a lunch hour.

What a waste of delicious corn fritters. Despite the change to the crappy transfat free oil, the corn fritters are still my favorite thing there.

As a fried chicken lover I have tried it twice and regretted it both times. Any time of day it is not good.
You need to locate your nearest Mary Browns, and as a bonus they are built slab on grade.

I just got back from LA where a stop at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle House (or sometimes Honey's Kettle Chicken) is always a necessity. I would love to find somewhere local that has a similar quality and style of fried chicken (old-school chicken-on-the-way was close). Does it have something to do with the trans-fat laws? I seem to remember that CotW had to change their recipe when that bylaw came into effect.

I must have blocked A&W's awful Chubby Chicken out of my mind.
Remember Church's Chicken? That was pretty decent.

I used to be a City of Calgary meter reader and their meter was in the basement. I remember garbage bins filled with water with chicken floating in it - it was kind of weird. An employee told me they half fry the chicken in the AM too for the noon hour rush so when they finish cooking it when ordered it doesn't take as long.
Didn't see any swinging down there though.

Hmm, that looks pretty tempting. I think I saw a Groupon for them once, and then I was kind of like "what's this halal stuff?"
I like fried chicken that tastes good cold the next day after being in the fridge. Is this good for the day after, or is it only good fresh?

I have to say, this has to be one of the most unintentionally funny threads in a long time.

I was in Winnipeg last week and they had this place called Chester's Fried Chicken in the mall across from the MTS centre. Pretty decent but still not as good as Church's, but a billion times better than KFC.
