I'm sure the Russian population won't have the balls to oppose this.

What is surprising is that in some cases, even if the offender was physically castrated, they continued to offend. Some pedo's need to be locked up for good, there is no rehabilitation.

I fully support this. I wish every country in the world did the same (although like zamler said this is just a step......most if not all should never be released)

I'm just happy someone finally had the balls to put this into effect (pun intended).

The Russians have such a sparkling reputation for incorruptibility and justice right now. I can't see how this could possibly go wrong.

He didn't say it was a "step", he basically said it wasn't an answer to the problem. If the answer is to lock them up for good how is this a step towards that? People support this because they want to see physical punishment for the crime, not because it's a solution. Actually that seems to be all most people want when it comes to this sort of thing, punishment after they're caught. I get why people want that, but if what you're looking for is a solution I think there should be some focus on finding these people and giving them some kind of help before they do something terrible..... I guess I'd also say it's important to make the distinction between finding them and hunting them down. Not that I know how you would help these people if you found them, but it seems pretty clear to me that this is the kind of thing a person doesn't choose, it's something they're born with, and as such if they haven't done anything wrong they should have places where they could go for help or support, or who knows what. I really have no idea what the solution is, but if you're actually looking for a solution rather than just a punishment there should probably be some focus on identifying these people before they offend.

Do we know that castration will actually stop pedophilia? Or is this just meant to be more along the lines of a deterrent?

I believe that chemical castration has been shown to be effective as long as they take their meds. I would like to see this as mandatory for all serious sex offenders.

I'm against the death penalty, and believe that in most cases rehabilitation is the way to go in most cases, just easier on the system. But when it comes to pedophiles I don't have a lot of patience. For some reason I'm not against this at all. I don't know if that makes me hypocritcal in some way, or there's a logical flaw in my thinking and feeling, but I'm not really against this. Maybe it's because child sex offenders are near impossible to reform. But it's mostly because crimes against children feel like the worst crimes a person could commit.
However, as Rouge said, it probably opens the door to a lot of problems and abuses for justice systems.
P.S. Two castration threads in one day. What are the odds? I don't think I'll have an erection for a week.

You can no more make a pedophile stop being attracted to children then you can make a gay person straight.
and no I'm not comparing the two.
But pedophilia is linked to your sex drive, a pedophile is sexually attracted to young children, you can't rehabilitate it.
I believe that at the very least that sex crimes against Children should automatically be life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Yeah, that's what I've heard too. And it would be hard to imagine living like that. Though, as tough as it is, you'd think a morality instinct would kick in for these type of people. Who knows, maybe it does for many, and it's just the few who commit crimes.
I mean, there are lots of things that are wrong in the world that we'd all like to engage in, from time to time, or often, but we don't because we know it's wrong and wouldn't want people to do it to us. Agreed, having it tied to your sex drive, your very being, would make it harder to not engage in, than say for me not to steal from someone. But still you'd think one could logically and emotionally tell themselves it's not the proper thing to do.

I believe that Pedophilia is the rare combination of sex drive and a need to assert power, thats why when a lot of these people are interviewed they feel like they're giving a gift to their victim, which were the exact words that Graham James used in defending his belief that he had done nothing wrong.
You can't ever feel confident that you can use your personal sense of morality to suppress your sex drive. there are outlets for Males and females both homo and hetero sexual and beyond that both acts are legal and there is no need to hide it (except in the bible belt). On the other hand with Pedophilia there is no legal outlet, and the police have only started to investigate the baby brothels in the far east.
I also believe that when it comes to protecting children there should be no taking chances, There's no real proof of successful rehabilitation of actual pedophiles, therefore I don't think that you take the chance or give them the possibility of being around children.
Personally I think work farms in the far north would be a great idea.

It does for many I'm sure. But a persons inherent sex drive and sexual attraction is incredibly hard to deny, in fact it's nearly impossible. Seeing a pedophile often continues to offend even when chemically or physically castrated, removing the hormonal influences isn't enough, there is still a mental drive and addiction.
