Good one, lol
Looks like tomorrows on ice stuff has been cancelled (unsurprisingly) so tonight's write-ups will be the last ones.

I'd like to ask - A lot of what you say about Howse reminds me of Dawes - Good shot, but not a great skater. How close are the two do you think? I mean, I think Howse is a combination of Cammalleri and Dawes, taking a Dawes' skillset and putting them into Cammalleri's playing style, but I haven't seen much of Howse so I could be way off base.

I haven't watched Howse except on the videos, but IMO, Howse simply needs to reduce his body fat, get stronger, and eat better to improve his speed quite a bite. He's 5"11 and 205lb which is above optimal weight, but he hasn't hit the ice this off season yet (planning to start shortly), has been working out hard off ice with Rich Hesketh, and had to recover from some injuries after his season in Chilliwack ended. Howse is quite a bit bigger than Dawes or Cammaleri (both are 5'9), so he won't need to rely as much as Cammaleri does on being a dynamic skater to make room for himself. He plays a similar style to them, but if Dawes was Howse' size, he'd almost certainly still be in the NHL.

Hey FlamesRule14 - you've been quoted...

Calgarypuck member Flamesrule14 had this to say about Gaudreau's performance at camp:Caught myself watching him most of the sessions. So incredibly small. Seriously his jersey must be 2 sizes to big and he looks like a boy amoung men. Damn though he has all world skill. Real good shot and just great with the puck. Had a little trouble with the power skating(especially going backwards), but still has pretty good speed. Head is always up too. Him and Wahl just put on an absolute clinic on one of the 2 on 2 drills. If he can get some size and strength I definetly think he could be a player. Time is on his side too with him going to college so he can really develop and hopefully become a steal. Definitely the guy I came away today most impressed with.

But with the umlaut (the two dots above the a) Sven Bärtschi
Umlauts are usually replaced by an e behind the vowel when anglicizing the name that is why some websites have him as Baertschi. I wonder if he'd get the umlaut on his NHL jersey, that would be funny.

I could see him go with the ä - he has it in the WHL and also the WJC. Basically there is no difference between "Bärtschi" and "Baertschi", as ä and ae are the same in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He can also just drop it and go with "Bartschi", as Andreas Nödl and Thomas Pöck did. Then again, the "ö" is far more difficult for non-German speakers than the "ä" ... my guess is he'll use the umlaut. "Bear" is surely a better nickname than "Bart"

I have had the privilage of watching Holland over the last few years here in Tri-Cities. He is my favorite player on the ice. He often looks to pass before he shoots which can become frustrating because I know how great of a shot he has. I am so glad he is performing well at camp. I hope it only boosts his confidence more to be performing so well. The kid will be in his 19 yo season in the dub this year. Patient, great puck handler, quick stick on D and on the PK. Great skating two way player!

Thanks for the report on Patrick Holland. I am excited to watch his progression as well. Do you know if Brendan Shinnimin was invited to any NHL prospect camps?. I was hoping the Flames would bring him in for a look.

I don't beleive Shinnimin was invited to any NHL camps. His size and behavior on the ice this year hurt him I think. He has a great scoring touch and is a great skater but at 5 9' I think this hurt him. He is tenacious on the ice but he has become somewhat as an agitator between the whistles that has got too much attention from other teams as well as referees in the league. However, even with the 12 game suspension he served this year, he managed posting just under 100 points. The kid is a great player but has to learn to tame his emotions. I would love for him to get a shot with the Flames! Definately worth a look.

In one of my conversations with a buddy I found out that the Rangers have been taking a look at Shinny. I don't know how much of a look and couldn't find any thing other then a blurb about it but thought I would post back and let you know. I will look around and see if I missed an article locally.

Didn't know where else to put this.
The Flames have invited Peter Kosterman (D) of the Hitmen to play in the upcoming prospect's tournament.
Link: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL.../18611596.html
He's a 6'4" defenseman from Calgary. Looks to be a fighter/defensive defenseman more than anything else. I'm sure some of you who follow the Hitmen will know more than me about him. Anyone care to share?
Here's his stats from the last 3 seasons: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=116359

Kosterman's basically playing for an AHL contract (aka, a trip to Utah).

The 93-born group is led by Reid Jackson who is now entering this third season in the WHL. Jackson earned an invite to Calgary Flames Training Camp this fall after going undrafted in the 2011 NHL Draft. A great change in his offseason training regimen has Jackson entering camp at close to the 190 pound mark compared to his 176 pound frame from last season. This added size combined with his skill and agility at moving the puck will make him one of the key players in the Canes defensive corps.
