Why on earth are you moving here? Not that it's not a great place, it's God's country, most beautiful place I've ever been to (don't take my word for it, ask National Geographic). But why on earth would you move to one of the most economically depressed areas in the country? Unless you mean Nova Scotia/East Coast in general in which case let me know when you're doing the trail, if you're in Sydney I'll give you a tour & we can grab a beer.

Both my brother and I have done this (different times my bro last year, me in 2003). It's fun to see the country, get a sense of what the people are like, the geography, the iconic landmarks. I got to see all the Canadian NHL teams play in their home rinks that year. Stupid Winnipeg throwing off my "I've seen all the Canadian teams play at home" statement!

It could have been a lot worse that is for sure, based on the time of day it happened! There is a bunch of stuff on youtube about it. To me that would almost knock a $0 off of some of the outrageous real estate in that area that is right on the edge where the mountains meet the ocean. One day it will be more than just the road dropping. They still had the Big Sur marathon and just had to route things a bit differently and to my knowlege the road is 100% open and just down to one lane with a stop light in the small portion that needs to be repaired. We are heading up North anyways so we have an entire extra lane beside us for most of the way.....have to often pull over to get the killer views. I have yet to do the drive heading south and I think that would be even better!

I don't believe he's moving to Cape Breton, going to school here in Halifax. The Cabot Trail is just on the driving around list.

My buddy and I did this roadie when we were 20. Was a great time. Had tix to Price is Right during LA stop, but stupid bob barker got sick and went to the hospital... had to settle for Craig Killborne Show. Took us 20 days. We had multiple-day stops at most places. Took the ocean highway (pacific coast highway?) between LA and San Fran. Took forever, but was a nice route.

Never been to much of a road trip guy, but the longest one I have done is to Prince Rupert and home.
However next month I am going to do a 15 country train trip in Europe for 3 weeks.

Also did this one in 1 night.... It sucked, but it was a long weekend and there wasnt a single hotel room from Kamloops to Calgary, and the gf didn't want to sleep on the side of the road.

No worries I'm sure others could chime in, but according to google maps, the fastest way is:
- Highway 2 to Nanton
- Skip over to Highway 22 via 533
- Take Highway 3 into BC
- Take Highway 95 across the border to Coeur d'Alene
- I-90 through Spokane to Seattle
Total: 1,138 km; 12:53 travel time.
The other option is to take Highway 1 to BC (including the shotcut on Highway 5) amd then hit the Sumas border crossing south of Abbotsford.
Total: 1,088 km; 13:26 travel time.
I've done the Calgary-Vancouver drive enough times that I would prefer the US route, plus gas is cheaper in the US.
PS: If you're splitting the drive into two days, a stopover in Spokane might fit the bill.

Did this exact trip a couple of years ago and put on 6,853 kms. Nice work as a 20 year old! I did the more basic LA and back as a 16 year old with a buddy with stops at Grand Canyon, Lake Powell and Zion and even that was one of the best road trips ever for me. The music we had cranking out still cycles through my mind from time to time. Ahhh going 90 miles an hour in the 90's...a much simpler time.

This is the way to go!

Washington State has a bit of everything in it! Take your time, but it can be done in 12-13 hours if you are rushing.

The Dempster is a hell of a drive but well worth it. I'm sure I've said it on here before, but Dawson City is the best town in Canada to party in!
Also, Teslin is in The Yukon... noticed in your pics you have it labelled as BC. Not that it's a big deal.
I swam out to Bove Island last summer with a few of the natives there. Not recommended for white people! Holy crap that water was cold. Thanks for posting the pics, brought back some great memories for me.

Golden Gate Park in San Francisco down to Santa Monica on California #1. Love doing that and taking three or four days to do it. Lots of places to stop. Included running the Big Sur Half-Marathon out of Monterrey a few years ago which was a treat (albeit crowded). Carmel, Morro Bay . . . .
Rode my bicycle one time from Banff down through Sandpoint and Cour d'Alene, Idaho, over to Helena, Montana, through Kellogg, Missoula, up through Great Falls and back up through Calgary one time. Drove it a number of years later and couldn't believe how crazy it was to ride a bike doing that. Very hilly and a nice little road trip. You could probably figure out some way to do that via the Going To The Sun Road in Montana.
Was driving the coast of Oregon last September. Pretty nice. Ran the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon a bit inland at McMinnville where you will inexplicably find one of the greatest aerospace museums of all time. I'm in the crowd at the race!!! http://www.run4oregonwine.com/
For just a day-long amble in the country, I will shamelessly plug a trip out to the Millarville Farmers' Market, Alberta's second largest outdoor market with more than 170 vendors, starting next Saturday, June 11, with extended hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every Saturday through Oct. 8. Then continue on into Black Diamond where you can walk around a bit. Some nice little cafes in Turner as well. Maybe go home the long way through Bragg Creek and/or Cochrane.
On Canada Day, July 1, is the 106th Millarville Races which is a great family day. On August 5-7 is the 15th Annual Millarville Rodeo. On August 20 is the 104th Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair which had more than 4000 bench entries and more than 7,000 in attendance last year, both records. Great family fun to make up a day trip somewhere.

Below, coastal Oregon . . .
Below, along the Hood River separating Oregon and Washington . . .
Below, Sunset from the balcony over San Clemente, California, between San Diego and Los Angeles . . . .
Below, a stop between Monterrey and Carmel . . . .
Below, pie-eating at the Priddis & Millarville Fair . . . .
Below, at the century-old Millarville Races . . . .
and sack races on Canada Day at the Millarville Races . . . .

I did this road trip just before and during the May long weekend:
In July I have to make the trip down to Whitefish for a wedding. I have never been before, any recommendations on which way to go with the drive from Calgary?

Driving down to Yellowstone on a few weeks for a week of camping and then driving to Tofino for another week of camping. Have no real idea how to occupy a week in each place. Tofino is known for kayaking, but don't know if that jives well with young kids.

Usually when me and the family drive to Vancouver, we like to take the old #1 west out of Kamloops, through Cache Creek, and then down the Fraser canyon.
It only adds about a half day, but well worth it IMO. You just get more of a sense of the changing landscape as you come out of the interior, into the lower mainland. Hell's Gate is always cool to stop at, especially when it's 35+, like it tends to get in July.
Along with that, we drive the #7 from Hope to North Van. A really nice rustic landscape with great views of the Fraser. Beats the hell out of that sightless stretch of tarmac past Chilliwack.
