I visited the Guzoo a lot in my younger days and sort of knew the family, but I was pretty appalled with the condition of the place when I was there about 4 years ago.

On another note, do you think the government would consider selling some of the animals to caring citizens? My next door neighbour from China said he would be more than willing to take some of the animals into his home and nurture and care for them.

And for the record... i have been there dozens of times and many happy memories.
The conditions were always fine.
There has always been a donation box and accepted volunteers to help.

I'm surprised some oil company hasn't stepped up to help in the name of being kind to animals; to try to make some ammends for recent tailings pond incidents.

Why doesn't green technology industry come in and make amends for their destruction of birds since they kill far more than the tailing ponds?
Why doesn't any of these people who complained come in and actually help redistribute these animals to caring facilities? Or are they just there for the complaining and it is now up to tax payers? Oh and save me the thing about zoocheck offering to help out. They hate zoos, and neither have the expertise nor the ability to deal with this situation.
Some rich Asian zoos will be on there way soon.

Michael Platt's article in the Sun today made me vomit. If Lynn can and is able he will donate the animals to another facility, if he can't what the hell alternative is there?
Shameful piece of slop trying to be passed off as some sort of journalism.

I find Micheal Platt's columns hit or miss. I read some of them and really enjoy them, and then I read some other ones and think "geez, this reads more like a smear campaign than a piece of journalism". I haven' read this specific column, so I can't comment on it, but yeah, he does tend to do the over-dramatic "omg, won't someone please think of the children" thing, a little too often.

Not only that the definition of what is "fine" has really changed over the last 2 decades. Like I said before, look at the multimillion dollar habitats the Calgary Zoo is building and compare those with the Guzoo. The simple fact of the matter is that small family owned zoos should not contain large and/or exotic animals. I don't think its a personal stab at the people who run Guzoo. As the way we treat animals progresses, places like the Guzoo simply should not exist anymore.

Ok, I have to ask. What the hell does this mean? What are you talking about?
Please enlighten me.

Birds often fly into the windmill turbines; and yes that number is likely waaaay larger than the number killed in tailing ponds.
I was speaking more for the sake of appearances on the part of the oil companies- that's all. Many people saw it as a huge issue.

Objectively, it's kind of weird that we're (mostly) ok with shooting cows and pigs in the face (hyperbole) for food and yet we're so willing to save other animals.
Oh well, I'll still eat steak wrapped in bacon.

at 11:57 AM ETIts too bad this came to the point it has and this story makes no sense. This guy has been running a petting zoo for years. The animals are well taken care of and even the inspectors gave him a good report. This is all being forced upon him because of the animal wing nuts. It took them 10 years to close this guy down and they have finally done it. Too bad they went through a kangaroo court because in a fair society he would have a chance to appeal. His zoo is better run than most and the animals are treated better than most government run zoos. A sad day for freedom

I'm actually surprised it took so long...not because I think Lynn is a cruel, heartless man, but because it sounds like, for years, he's been trying to care for these animals (which likely have no place to go, as it sounds like many of them have personality issues) with an extremely limited budget.

An amazing and true story about a single dad who decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places: a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory
