Ebay is probably a good bet.
The only vintage media I think is still actually cool are records. Laserdisc reminds me of minidisc. Only a few people ever really had them and something better came along pretty soon after.

I guess it wouldn't surprise you to know I have a few minidisc players kicking around? Then again, it was a staple for assignments for my radio schooling...

I used to have one too. It sucked. I had to literally record music into it in real time...some of the later ones let you transfer files over similar to an mp3 player. I sold it to some sucker in the bargainfinder and got my first mp3 player (the Creative Zen) days later. That was a life altering piece of technology.

I have mine set up in the garage. Proof as to how much I use it.
Honostly, I really only want to track down the original Star Wars Trilogy for Laserdisc for now. If I come across anything else it would be bonus.

Would Recordland in Inglewood have any? Seems like the type of obscure thing they might have a few kicking around.

I've read that the LD of the Star Wars Trilogy is the definitive version before George Lucas started "correcting" things in subsequent releases.

Yeah, I got into an arguement with somebody once over the Star Wars LDs. He claimed to have seen a production LD-ROM drive for a computer; so the content could be ripped from LD and re-mastered digitally to DVD.
It was a bigger issue at the time; because none of the Star Wars movies had been released on DVD yet.

You can understand why I would want it then.
The DVDs that came out with the original films were direct copies of the LD from what I rememeber. They weren't compressed the same as DVD, nor was it the aspect ratio or something.
Even the Bluray that will be coming out soon has the 'updated' movies on it. I don't know why someone as money hungry as Lucas wouldn't offer the originals too, or maybe he's waiting until everyone has bought this one to offer it up to us.
A buddy of mine who lurks these parts called Recordland, sounds like they have a collection there.
Yasa - Thanks for the link. I've been keeping my eyes on these for a while, but looks like I'd be paying more in shipping than I would for the item itself. Would like to try and find it local before I go that route.

Just called Recordland. They have some on sale, and they had Empire. For amazingly cheap I might add. Now to find time to get down there and pick it up.

I know they're outdated, but has anyone seen any discs for sale in Calgary? I've kept my eye on Kijiji, and on Ebay. Nothing is striking my fancy there. Ebay seems to have a mandate on charging $20 for shipping. Would rather find something locally and just pay for it.
Is Tramps still around? Does Video and Sound still sell them?
|
There was a place im Seattle that sold them. But, unfortunately that was sometime around 1992. Had a copy of "Penn & Teller Get Killed". Not the most practical form factor - discs the size of records and the discs were loaded from the top.

unfortunatley for you, I believe that was in 1999.
I wouldn't doubt it if there's a place out there that collects and sells these things.
Give Recordland a call (if they haven't gone out of business yet)
|
I don't think they will be going out of business any time soon. The place is always busy and with the Vinyl revival the dude is able to charge $20 for a record that probably cost him $2. He's doing alright.
