While I firmly believe that we need to move away from the property tax model and greatly appreciate the financial autonomy that a percentage of the income tax would provide, I also strongly believe that there such be mechanism, possibly a surcharge, that ensures a citizen's bill reflects the infrastructure and services cost that comes with their housing/lifestyle choice.

Sounds about right, talking with my buddies in Calgary. The funny thing is I really don't know what it's all going to in the City. I don't mind paying the higher taxes but give me some better roads and for god sake a third bridge across the river that this city needs so badly!

Several small communities assess with inaccurate values, but have high mil rates.

Had we bought the same house in Hanna on the west side of town our taxes would likely be $4,000, and not the $1,500 we pay instead.

The small community I work in also has the same issue.

I wonder how parking spaces are calculated? EDIT: I read it wrong, I actually owe $56.69 for each space.

I got about a 30% reduction in an assessment at the assessment review board earlier this month, so if you actually think they're off with their assessment its worth it to pay the fee and argue about it with them.

If I wasnt for paying property tax on my parking stall and not having the option to not own the parking stall and parking on the street because my building doesnt qualify for me to buy an M parking pass I would never complain about the amount of property tax I pay.
