"We see it almost on a daily basis along the border, the carjackings, the kidnappings, the home invasions, the extortion, the shootings from officers in Mexico into the United States,” Gonzalez said. “Some of the politicians will disagree with me about spillover violence. Freedom at it's finest.....

Also, Texas passed a bill to allow concealed handguns in public universities.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011...c-universities

"The holders of concealed handgun licences are set to be allowed to carry weapons into public college buildings and classrooms in Texas, after Republicans in the state senate approved the measure as part of a universities spending bill."

Several ranchers in Arizona have been murdered by illegal Mexican drug runners as well.......it is terribly violent down there.

I don't think it gets near the attention it deserves. It is literally safer to live in Afghanistan than a Mexican border town.

I should charge them for that slogan, so apt.

Not sure how having a gun helps you with random bullets traveling the half mile plus from across the border, I suppose you could just randomly shoot back at the general direction of Mexico.

That's not what spillover violence means.

Don't mind him. He seems to think that all violence is just drunken shenanigans that can only escalate into a shoving match.

True, but that was what the article was about.

And beyond that a gun won't do a thing to protect you except in incrediably limited circumstances, chances are if you are walking to your car with a bag of groceries or the like when some crack head decides to rob you you won't have your gun anywhere near you.

I have nothing against gun ownership actually, and was married into a gun toting NRA membered family for years and went hunting and enjoyed it. I just think the idea that the average schmoe has the luck, judgement, opportunity and plain balls to protect themselves with a gun is inane. Mostly a gun will not help you one bit, and statistically will increase the chances you or a loved one gets hurt.

To use a slightly off base example, every adult male in Bin Laden's house was armed and knew how to use a gun, all had likely had some combat experience and some training, all of them had guns around them, Osama had 2 in the room with him when he was killed. Apparently only one of them even got any rounds off, most of them where stunned by the suprise of it all.

Tin Soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
