That's a bad run or a manufacturing defect for the model you chose. There's no way there industry as a whole is running a 25% failure rate like you are experiencing.
From what I've been able to find online, places like Consumers Reports peg LCD TV failure rates at the 3 year mark:
Quote:
Consumer Reports in the December 2010 issue published this list of reliability ratings based on surveys regarding 198,049 LCD TVs purchased between 2007 and mid-1010. At 4 years out, there is little change.
Panasonic 2%
Sanyo 2%
Sylvania 2%
Sony 3%
JVC 3%
Vizio 3%
Sharp 3%
Emerson 3%
LG 3%
Insignia 4%
Toshiba 4%
Magnavox 4%
Philips 4%
Viewsonic 4%
Samsung 4%
Westinghouse 8%
Polaroid 10 %
Mitsubishi 12%

So obviously I can't argue with your first hand experience, but I highly doubt any manufacturer could afford to use cheap components in the hopes of fostering obsolescence. It doesn't even make sense to do this - there's little to no brand loyalty in the consumer electronics space (at least until Apple makes TV's), so if a customer buys Brand X and it only lasts 1 year past the warranty, it's unlikely they will go out and get a replacement by Brand X the next time.
