CLTs are made with wood, it's the process that is different. Basically the wood is pressed together with giant machines that make it strong enough to build higher than six levels.

Here is a basic overview of the process: http://www.woodworks.org/files/PDF/P...0/Mohammad.pdf

There is a company called Structurlam Products Ltd. in Penticton that brought this technology to North America.

Weird, I always thought it was a fire safety issue for the height restriction.

Me too; I've been told by developers that it is because of how high fire ladders can get. They reach higher than they used to so, various municipalities now allow up to 6.

Do you know what the UBC development is called? I'd like to look into this more

BC housing guidelines still show a maximum of 6 stories and 18 meters for wood frame midrise development. The only way I see this being possible, is if these CLT's are not classified as wood frame.

They're all in the soft core porn thread.

Here is some more information:
http://dcnonl.com/article/id43534

Here are the guys who are starting the UBC project:

Cautionary note:
The guys at CST worked with SPL, stole the technology and underbid on the UBC project. The quality of the two companies equipment differs about as much as a real, game issued NHL jersey and a cheap Chinese knockoff. The SPL equipment is brand new, much larger, machine operated and supported by governments.

Interesting stuff.
But it doesn't look like there's a 12 story wood building going up near UBC; more like there's proposals to do so and attempt to get the province to allow larger than 6 stories. It could be a long ways before this gets approval.
