If the cops tried to pin him down, you'd just get a complain about how this kid got beat instead of sprayed. I think the spray was the best choice.
Lol come on kid was a major doosh bag, but pepper spray the best option? If a cop can't handle an 8 year old with a stick than I fear for their safety in other situations.
Probably a very good lesson though, and I wouldn't have minded something like this:

I dunno...he's an 8 year old with a stick. I'm fairly certain a cop could have taken a shot from an 8-year old, taken away the stick, then held him upside down by one leg until Mom arrived. Pepper spray seems so lazy...
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye!

Isn't pepper spray for exactly this kind of situation?
Sure it's just a kid with a stick, and the chances of the cops getting hurt is pretty slim.
If the cops rush the kid, he's gonna get hurt, and the cops may get hurt.
If the cops pepper spray the kid, he's gonna get hurt, and the cops wont.
Either way the kid gets hurt, stops what he's doing, and the situation is resolved. Why is it such a bad thing that the cops kept themselves out of a situation where they could get smacked with a stick?

No problem with the pepper spray. This wasn't the kids first run in with the cops either, so clearly the severity of the situation wasn't taking with this kid by just having the cops talk him down all the time. Talk about a waste of resources.
No parent wants to see their child hurt, but when your child is talking about wanting to find something sharp to deal with people he's mad at...I think you have to reconsider the direction your child is going and stop looking to blame the people dealing with him.

Is anyone else eagerly awaiting Mikey's take on this situation?
I can't wait to see what side of this he is on.
Well since you were eagerly waiting.......I wish this was on youtube.
1. for the entertainment factor
2. so all the cop lovers can see how dooshy it looks when a grown man uses a weapon on an 8 year old.
This is just another sad pathetic action by the police. It's right up there with the cops that shut down a little girl's lemonade stand for not having a permit.

I dunno, depends how sharp that stick was. I mean, what if he jabbed you in the leg with it while you're pinning him down? Or he managed to jab an eye ball out. I'd rather just pepper spray the kid and face the consequences later. I'd be superchoked if I somehow lost an eye because I held up using pepper spray.
And honestly, it's not like there's any after effects with it. Why wouldn't you want to spray the brat?

It's pepper spray. He didn't shoot the kid. Yes, it hurts but you're going to get hurt when you threaten to kill your teachers and wave a stick around.
When I was 8 years old, I just about broke my dad's arm with one of those "mini-hockey-sticks" (those foot and a half things they sell as souveniers).... think about how much damage a boy could do with a yard stick?
Behavioural issues or not, kids (people) need to be taught consequences of their actions.
Behavioural issues or not, kids (people) need to be taught consequences of their actions.
But it's not the kid's fault, the teachers shouldn't have called the police, the police shouldn't have pepper sprayed him, he's fine when he's swimming. If the schools didn't change from social studies to gym then he wouldn't act out. Clearly it's the school's fault.
Now let's buy the kid a video game and give him ice cream and a hug, he's the victim in this, the little angel.

NASA must see your boner from space when threads like these pop up. D2mn dude - your posts are awesome.
I can't imagine being terrified of an eight year old with a yard stick so much that I locked myself in an office with several other adults and we were all afraid to come out.
Wow!
I'm not sure what I would have done if I worked at that school, but I hope I wouldn't have been fired for doing it.

Bunk. so a 200 pound man tackles a 50 or 60 pound kid to the ground. first and foremost, you at that point loss control of how much damage your going to do to the kid. B) Suddenly mommy's running to every lawyer and paper in town showing off her bruised kid and crying that the cops beat precious down. C) At least with pepper spray it stings but there's no risk of bodily harm, its not douchy, its the best solution to be had in this situation.
Personally once they disabled the kid they should have fired a peppery blast down his a$$ crack, the kid wouldn't have been able to poop for a week without crying.

My wife has worked at both an Autistic school and the Gordon Townsend school which had a unit for kids suffering from psychiatric and behavioural issues. There are some horribly scarred kids who have a crazy amount of rage inside and sometimes they can do some damage. Towards the end of her time there the teachers rarely dealt with the ones completely melting down as it's too dangerous to themselves and the student. Call the police - it's their speciality.

i imagine it is partly protecting themselves from the kid, and partly protecting themselves against a lawsuit for doing anything to the kid

Yup, that's kind of what I figured.
It's also exactly what I'd have expected if the cops had just tackled and cuffed the kid.
