Just a theft deterent. If they don't see the faceplate on, and think it may not be in the car, they'll just move on.

I wouldn't recommend taking the faceplate off. I thought i would be doing this, and I did for about 3 months. I forgot about it one day, and something heavy scratched the surface. If you do take it off, put it somewhere where it will be absolutely safe from the possibility of scratches, even if you are driving =P (should be a given i guess, but we all make mistakes) Also, I have been driving with the plate on and leaving it on, with no tampering or any issues. i guess i can only speak for myself though.

The only situation in which i would not leave the faceplate on is if the deck is almost worth more than your vehicle. These vehicles are more likely to be stolen than newer, nicer vehicles.

Maybe for you and I but with the changing technology in today's vehicles it's not just plug and play. Removing a dash isn't always easy for someone with no experience to figure out. I can't recall how many times people would bring their vehicles in and panels were broken, clips missing, fuses blown. Not to mention factory amplifier and control bypass/intigration. With some vehicles going as far as optical and data lines for their audio.

I guess what I am trying to say is it is not as simple as changing a tire for everyone or there wouldn't be car audio install shops open.

I have moved on from my "career" as an installer and with it changing so fast there are some newer vehicles that I wouldn't touch and I am MECP certified with 10+ years experience.

I wouldn't take it off everytime I got out of the car but if I were leaving it overnight somewhere like the C-Train station I would.

The last time I took a faceplate off a stereo was the night of September 10, 2001. I drove to work the next day completely oblivious to what was going on in NYC. NEVER AGAIN, I TELLS YA!

I just don't bother anymore. I leave my GPS in my truck all the time as well. Knock on wood, I suppose. I guess I just figure that electronics are so cheap these days, that the kids have better things to do with their time than risk criminal charges for an item that'll only get them a few bucks at the pawn shop.

I was planning on doing my sub myself but sitting in a lawn chair drinking beer sounds like a much better option...

It can be done let me know if you end up with one and what features you want the alarm starter to have and I can probably get you a break in price on the unit and parts on top of the labor.
