I would assume just Vancouver as it's a separate municipality

75?
If its the same recent study I know of, Vancouver was actually the 2nd least affordable city in the world next to Hong Kong. After Vancouver was Sydney and some other Aussie cities.
That list was in terms of housing affordability, so maybe the one you saw was looking at other types of costs.
This list is actually like a mirror image of that list, so they obviously are not considering affordability at all.

I live in Vancouver now, the cost of living ruins it for me. I'd rather live in Calgary.
I also lived on Oahu for 3 years. Despite the cost of living and poor health care, I'd far rather live there than anywhere in Canada. I guess it's all about what factors you place the most value on.

I wonder if these list creators realize that Vancouver is home of the Canucks. That alone puts it down 300-400 spots. Sure it's green, everything is close by, the environment is nice, and all of that but the Canucks!!! And yes, I lived in the Greater Vancouver area for 15 years before moving back to Calgary.

Too effin expensive. It's like NY.....unless your bags are full of money, it's always going to be a struggle to maintain a standard of living that's even moderately decent. It's one of those places that's great to be if you're young and can handle the small apartment and cheap lifestyle, but as soon as you add things like cars and kids, it gets out of hand.
No doubt California is one of the most perfect places on earth when it comes to weather and lifestyle.....but if only it was about 50% cheaper!

If I was super rich and didn't have to worry about my career or house prices, I'll have to agree that Vancouver would be a better place to live (IMO of course). Given a choice, I think Victoria BC would be my ideal place to retire to when I'm old. I love being so close to the ocean.

This is gonna infuriate you Calgary folk, but I don't think I could ever live in your city. I just got back from there and I couldnt believe just how freakin dirty it was. The roads, the sidewalks, the cars, everything was covered in dirt. I realize why it's dirty because of the snow and salt and stuff, but it's pretty gross IMO. And wash your damn cars people!!! If you can't read your license plate because it's covered in filth, it's time to wash your car!!!
And the weather......no thanks. I don't like having to bundle up everytime I step out the door.
Having said all that, I've never really been outside of Vancouver(Cancun, Disneyland and Okanagan towns are the exception) so I can only compare your city to the BEST CITY IN THE WORLD!!

I always thought to myself that if I have no money for some reason when I retire, living in a place like Vietnam or Thailand would be cool. You could stretch your budget pretty far, much more than you could in Canada.
Although I'm sure I'm missing something here that others have already looked into.

Gotta agree, the general dustiness of Calgary kind of bothers me too. Compared to Vancouver, where everything is generally always wet and shiny because of the rain, it definitely makes everything look a little grungy. It's a brown and dusty town (the brown and tan buildings everywhere don't hel), which isn't always the prettiest of sights.
But a glorious Alberta sunset in a warm summer month? I have yet to experience few things more glorious!

I mean this in all seriousness...if you wash your car in the weather we had over the weekend your doors will freeze shut.

I live in Vancouver right now and may have a chance to come back to Calgary very soon. Its actually a pretty tough choice. There are certainly pros and cons between the 2 cities. I love Calgary because I grew up there and have lots of good friends and family here, and the Flames of course. But its also a very friendly city, spacious and comfortable to live in. Everyone I know in Calgary has a good standard of living and seems to be able to provide for themselves well materially speaking. And the sun...man the sun is great. Yeah it gets cold but its never as dark and dreary as Vancouver gets.
But Vancouver has certain things that you don't get a lot of in Calgary. Distinctive pedestrian communities, an amazing public transit system, beaches, and amazing selection of restaurants. The cost of living can obviously be much higher though, and people are nice but do seem a little more pretentious at times.
At the end of the day 3 major Canadian cities are in the top 5. I think any way you cut it you are lucky to live in this part of the world.

Vancouver streets are littered with garbage?? News to me. And given that you know, I live in the city, something tells me that I might have a better idea than you.
If you're going to come back and give me the old and tired downtown east side argument, might as well stop now. Every city has bad areas. Downtown east side is pretty disgusting and is a big problem, but it's such a small area of the city. Downtown East Side does not define Vancouver as a city like you tried to do with your above comment about the garbage.
Walk in Yaletown, Kits, Coal Harbor, Point Grey, Kerrisdale, Commercial Drive, False Creek etc and show me evidence of littered streets. Your argument is ridiculous.

A friend of mine going to UBC that I just talked to on Friday said he misses Calgary but also loves Vancouver. He was in town for reading week.
He said it was so nice to see the sunset/sunrise and see any sun at all really because he hasn't seen the sun in months in Vancouver.
On the other hand it was like -20 or -25 and he said he certainly doesn't miss the freezing ass cold.
Vancouver is a little more cultured and has some cool stuff to do. But it is also crazy expensive and has about 10x the pop. density that we have.
