The downside to playing this contest is you actually have to buy/drink a Tim Hortons coffee.
Absolute trash.
And no, I'm not one of those who gets suckered into a $5 coffee or latte from Starbucks everyday. I feel sorry for people who have to spend that kind of money to feed their caffeine habit, it's not much different than smoking.
I'll enjoy a coffee a couple times a month but it's not a daily need (and coming from a teacher that's saying something, people around me live on that stuff).
I just find it funny that people will go out of their way to buy and consume a cup of Tim's garbage everyday for two months in the hope of winning......a coffee. Or a 75c re-heated donut.

It's completely different. The main difference is nobody has proven coffee is bad for your health.
People are having a little fun with the promotion. Thanks for pointing out that a fast food contest won't yield much in the way of gains for its participants, I'm sure people will be shocked to find out.
What I find funny is you posted this without realizing how condescending and self-aggrandizing it sounded.

It's not bad for your health? Assuming you're under the RDA for caffeine in a day, the jury is still out on coffee itself (although there are findings that consumption increases heart disease risk, among other things), but the fact is nearly everyone who consumes it isn't just drinking a cup or two of black coffee or coffee with non-fat milk a day.
Ignoring overconsumption, look at other things associated with coffee intake. The amount of sugar (and sometimes fat) in certain coffees is absurd. Not to mention people also tend to eat donuts, or muffins, or other empty carbs with their morning coffees.
Roll up the rim is just another way the fast food industry is capitalizing on how cheap it is to add an incentive (which, as evidenced by these threads every year, isn't much of one with such a low chance of winning) to make people ingest even more crap than they normally do.
60% of adults are overweight or obese, and even more live unhealthy lifestyles. Are you suggesting promotions such as this have nothing to do with those stats?

No I was suggesting nobody has proven coffee is bad for your health and that the contests are fun. The contests probably do, but I'm glad the bar provides me with beer, so to speak. I think people can make their own choices when it comes to health and being overweight isn't the end of the world. Far from it, in fact. I do support increased education when it comes to healthy eating and lifestyle.

My apologies if that's how it came across; wasn't the intent.
I guess I just don't understand why many people go out of their way to buy coffee every day at Tim's (when they don't normally) just to get the chance to maybe win an item that normally costs a dollar or less.
Is it because rolling up the rim is more exciting to consumers than simply handing out coupons like A&W? Is it because they usually have a minivan that dangles like the ultimate carrot to everybodys eyes? Or do people just like doing it because they feel more "Canadian" when they participate?
This obviously doesn't refer to those who have a daily Tims coffee anyway - its a fun promotion for them. I'm more talking about those who go out of their normal habits to take part in this.
Honestly curious. It seems like Tim's is the real winner in all of this - a genius marketing ploy that sucks everyone in.
edit: as for it being bad for you, I know people who if they don't get their coffee twice daily, they start getting nervous, jittery and have headaches. They can't function. I'm not a scientist and can't explain that angle of it to you, but let's use common sense here - no way something that has those effects on you, are good for your health.

This is all well and good, but the problems start to arise when you think about the unconscious psychological aspects of food consumption in society.
It's a lot to get into, and I won't dive into a discussion about it here (I troll enough), but there's a fundamental problem in the way society views food. Contests like these are a huge part of said problem.

I agree with most of your views on nutrition (I think) and try to eat as well as I can. I know that most coffee drinkers add cream and sugar (among other things), but I always drink my coffee black. I have yet to see any bad studies for drinking black coffee in moderation. Aside from acting as a diuretic, black coffee is a better option than many other beverages. Honestly, it sounds like you have a problem with the coffee additives and not the coffee.
That being said, the calorie count for a large double double (probably the most common order) is staggering. I think that it is around 220 kcal per large.

Jesus, if you don't like coffee than don't drink it, don't give people a hard time for enjoying a cup or two a day. Live and let live.
I don't understand why people like you have such a problem with what other people decide to put into their systems. It does not effect you in any way. A person drinking a cup of coffee a day isn't going to make them obese, the people who are obese are obese for other reasons, adding cream to coffee may be a factor, however an insignificant one at that.
And besides, of all the bad things people put into their systems for enjoyment, coffee is one of the better ones.
Oh and back to the thread. Currently 0 for 1, won't be going to timmies much though because its reading week. How long does roll up the rim last again?

People like to engage in these for the social/reward aspect of it. It's fun. It's a treat. Some people just like going to the store to buy something as part of their routine. I had people come in and buy a newspaper every day when I worked at a gas station. Why didn't they get a subscription? They just wanted to have the event of going to the store to buy something.

You don't have to get into it, I know all about how fast food uses psychology to get people into their restaurants. But I think contests themselves are pretty banal and fun. Not really part of the problem.
