Truth be told though, it's impossible to fully replicate Coke's recipe because there's one ingredient only Coca-Cola can get: fluid extract of coca (which is coca leaves stripped of cocaine). Only one factory can process those leaves and only Coca-Cola has a special deal with the DEA that allows them to use it. So even if the secret is out, we're still missing the Coke in our Cola.

Nope, it just smells like the ocean when I walk in there. Usually just as humid too...or grease fog.

Don't think so... I imagine importing a lot of coca leaves would raise some red flags at customs

So if that is the right formula then, someone could grab it, patent it, and charge Coke to use it? That sounds like a loophole they would have closed somehow? I don't know much how patenting works, though.

You can't patent a recipe. This is why recipes of these giant chains are such a closely guarded secret.

No offence to the OP, but why does the media feel the need to report this 'secret' recipe?? Is there a huge demand worldwide to know these things? Obviously Coke kept it a secret for a reason. Let's just all enjoy our refreshing Coca-Cola beverage and leave it at that.

Sure you can.
The reason no one does is because
a) the patent is only good for a finite period of time (I belive 20 years)
b) as soon as you patent it, the formula becomes public knoledge, so once the patent expires anyone can start making it

It's for Classic Coke, not Diet Coke.
