I have been pricing out building a cabin; and I have my materials cost around $30K. So factor in another $10K for incidentals and you are around that $100K mark 90 minutes from Calgary.

This is a poor example in my opinion as at McGregor there are very sticky building restrictions that will prevent you from building a 30k cabin. The must have a concrete base, architectural exterior finishes etc. They also have fairly significant monthly fees, kinda like a condo fee that covers park upgrades, clean up and so on.
I have a permanent spot at Westward Ho near Sundre and pay $1400 per year. It is an unserviced lot but is well worth it, and since we have many friends there now we will not consider moving. I guess that is one of the big advantages of a permanent spot, you actually get to know the people around you. But bigger than that is the ability to be spontaneous, try leaving on a Saturday of a long weekend with out a reservation. Camping in Alberta means you have to plan months in advance, which does not meet my needs, hence the permanent spot.
