Yeah, absolutely. I was there a few years ago. I went on the tour of Auschwitz first, and I have to admit, it was a bit underwhelming for me, the way that it was so scripted and calculated... the huge collections of shoes and eyeglasses and such. It was like they were trying too hard to create an impact where the impact was already obvious. But after leaving there and walking around Birkenau (basically a huge field now with the outlines of all the buildings and the furnaces and such, left pretty much the way the Germans left it), it really started to hit home with me. I guess the thing it impressed upon me is that evil does exist; I had never really thought about 'evil' as anything more than something that motivates villains in books.
