You know you can get the same oceanic feel on the east coast without all that rain. Plus the booze, think of the booze!

rock>the rock's booze
But it takes alcohol to live on the east coast no one is going to deny that.

If you have enough people, paintball is a great way to pass a few hrs. Calgary and the surrounding area's have some great PB fields.

wednesday night is an open mic night at karma in marda loop, usually some good music there.
There is places like the comedy cave and yuk yuks etc

But then you get a couple of blizzards each year that drop so much snow that you wouldn't be laughed at if you called the armed forces to come in.

naw, Haligonians is just as big of wimps as Torontoians
I was watching the Simpsons late on Sunday night on Global from Calgary on the dish. I missed the episode earlier that day, so I was catching it at your time.
The weather lady comes on and says "Be glad you're not in Halifax now!" I looked out my window to see five flakes falling onto the cleared sidewalk and said outloud "why?"
the media makes it seem WAY worse than it already is, and besides with CFB Shearwater, and the Atlantic Headquarters of the Navy, the army doesn't need to be called in, they're already here

A reason why I may move out to Vancouver in a few years. The rain forest...
|
I think I may have missed something, but the rain forest?
Which part of Vancouver is this? Or I'm guessing, which part of Vancouver Island? [/b][/quote]
West Vancouver I believe. Trust me there is rain forest and no, it's not just because there is a forest and it rains alot. The foliage, plant life is considered rain forest.
and in reply to Reaper, I'll take 11 out of 14 days of rain (Even though you're exaggerating) and green grass year long then brown, mucky, dirty roads all winter long.
Not to mention the Ocean at your door step. I guess I just prefer the coast to prairies. Flowers blooming in February... it's fataing beautiful you can almost taste the air.
I don't see why people bitch about rain... Rain=Life.

I hope you've got half a mil so that you can buy a nice little starter shack. Of course, you'll need lots of buckets because the kind of shack you can buy for half a mil might get you a roof, but not a completely working one.
And I hope you like traffic. Lots and lots of traffic. Not only lots of traffic, but very poorly planned infrastructure for that traffic. Good times.

I did some digging around the net and found the average is 45% over the year. November to January is actually 73% (which would be about 10 and a half days out of 14).

Thanks for the replies guys, but yeah, pretty much what I was expecting, but hey, nothing wrong with that
I'm actually born and raised here, my grandparents would take me to Devonian Gardens every week, I'd visit the Zoo, been to Kananaskis and Banff camping and hiking more times than I remember. Really just looking more for any new or interesting things to goto or do that have popped up in Calgary, but I guess it's more of the same.
I really loved exploring downtown and the +15's as a kid but I've walked all of them and been up and down Steven Ave almost everyday when I worked at Bankers Hall. I was looking for more of a small group activity or something, I'm not sure what. I'd love to take hours going through the Glenbow Museum, unfortunately, my friends are all losers and no geeks like me. Last time I was in downtown with a friend by Olympic Plaza I even suggested going to the Castell Library but of course, they didn't want to. Hanging out on 17th is also nice, but it gets old too like everything else.
The Vancouver Island rain forest is awesome, as is the sea, and the rain, and greenery. But I'm sure even they get sick of places like Granville Island just as one can get used to Princes Island Park, etc. I'm not that big a fan of Cochrane Icecream but the drive is fun.
Thanks for the replies, I was just hoping somebody could point out something new to explore that I didn't know about or some big secret where all the hot girls hang out that I didn't know about Seriously though, I'm more of an explorer at heart, but I think I've been through most places in this city. I want to feel that wonder and amazement again.

Do you ever do mountain scrambles in Kananaskis? It's a great group activity, and there's hundreds of mountains to climb. Nothing better than bagging a peak and drinking all the scenery in, IMO.

That sounds amazingly fun. I wish I had friends that would do things like that, but I'm chinese and my friends are generally un-sporty and don't do many outdoor activities. I was thinking more of an everyday thing somebody could just go and do in the city, in the life of a busy student.
I started hiking by myself one time up a mountain a few years back and ran into a grizzly. That was fun. That whole fall down and play dead thing...well, when you meet a big bear that stuff just doens't stick and you just run. Luckily, I wasn't high up the trail and quickly got back down and across the highway.
One of the cooler places in K-Country is King's Creek, just you have to get past the man-made trails and go really deep into it until you're crossing the river on unsteady stones and sticks, or just wading through, and scrambling everywhere until you reach the meadow.

Best thing to then is get in the car and head out of the city. Doesn't really matter what direction you go in you'll hit something interesting eventually. Well-except East - there ain't nothin' that direction except Regina eventually.
I'm a big fan of stupid road side stuff (world's largest frying pan and the like) so heading off in search of that type of unique crud can be incredibly fun for me.

ummmm Regina is not east... it's still west. For you it's west in an easterly direction
KEEP going east and you can have a pint with me, it'll be a gong show

Canucks = Life.... sorry I had to do that. But the rain would get old really quick. Especially when it comes to a couple weeks of rain every day.

Well the weather is nice this week...On a typical Saturday you can go rollerblading at Prince's Island Park in the morning breeze, then head to Banff's Miki (inside Inns of Banff) for some Sushi at lunchtime, rent a couple bikes in town and take a ride out to Lake Minnewanka, drive to Lake Louise for the Sunset, head back to Calgary afterdark, go to Eau Claire's Brewster for dinner & drinks ($2 parking flat rate after 6pm!) And then catch a late movie at your choice of huge multiplexes around town. There ya go. Boy do I sound like I work for Tourism Alberta or what

I lived on the west coast for 15 years and moved to get away from the dreary days and chill you to the bone winter rain. I remember one winter in high school when there was a month where we had one day without rain. Trust me, it's wet in Vancouver. Get used to having dirty pant legs from getting in and out of your car in the winter.
And the thing that I hate about the weather there is not the rain. It's the lack of sunshine from all the cloudy days.
Also, what type of flowers are blooming in February? We never had any in my whole time there so unless they are genetically engineered to bloom in 8 degree weather they don't exist.
What's this Rain equals life business? Yes, rain is a part of the ecological system that exists on the planet earth but that doesn't mean it's fun. I guess if you don't go outside to see the sun anyways it doesn't matter if it is shining or not. Probably why there are so many programmers in Vancouver...

Yeah because under your assumption I don't go out and enjoy the outdoors.... *rollseyes*
Anyhoo, I'm a born and raised Calgarian, it will always be my home town but I enjoy the coastal environment more than the prairies. Rain and all.
You're from Fort MacMurray right Adam? Hell I can see Calgary being the most beautiful city in the world coming from that hole.
Here is the way I see it as far as Western Cities go.
Vancouver>Calgary>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Edmonton.
I consider myself a homer in almost every aspect, but I have to give Vancouver the edge over Calgary in basically every aspect aside from traffic, and sports teams , mind you i've never spent longer than 10 days there.
