My first concert was Dire Straights. Dad took me when I was about 5 or 6. That album always triggers memories. Glad to hear he was slagging Motley Crue.
Interesting story about the song is that when recording it, and coming up with the chorus "I want my, I want my MTV" the band realized that it was a direct rip-off of Sting's tune with the chorus "Don't stand so, don't stand so close to me."
So instead of rewrite the chorus, they just go down the hallway to the next studio where Sting is recording, drag him back to their session and have him actually sing the chorus! Then they give him a songwriting credit. Booyah copyright infringment avoidance!
The other day I was flipping through the crappy radio stations in town here when they were playing a Nickelback (yeah I know) song. I noticed that they cancelled the word "bong" out of the song but kept in the words a$$ and b!tch. Like......10 year olds can listen to this stuff.
Then you hear Lady Gaga on the radio teaching little girls to ride "disco sticks" and act like sluts. But, but.......we wouldn't want to offend a couple gays..

What would CBSC make of the Jewel song, Pieces Of You?
You say he's a ######, does it make you want to hurt him?
You say he's a ######, do you want to bash in his brain?
You say he's a ######, does he make you sick to our stomach?
You say he's a ######, are you afraid you're just the same?
######, ######, do you hate him
'Cause he's pieces of you?
In this context, the artist is critical of the word.

Ive never understood how a controversial word or swear will be played in one song yet changed in another for radio use.
Are there times of day where anything will fly?

I find it funny how you'll rarely hear a Tragically Hip song censored/edited on the air, whether it's Fireworks, Hundredth Meridian, Locked in the Trunk of a Car or even Highway Girl live double suicide version.

Call the CBSC, say you are a lawyer representing someone who finds the song offensive. Get Jewel banned as well! Let's get all songs banned! Then we don't have to listen to stupid Canadian radio stations anymore.
Reminds me of Al and Tipper Gore's campaign to censor music in the 80s because they were horrified at the lyrics their daughter was listening to in Prince's Darling Nikki.
As far as Mark Knopfler - my of my favorite movies of all time is 1983's "Local Hero" and he did most of the soundtrack.

Frank Zappa's appearance at the PMRC Hearings is classic:
No one has forced Mrs. Baker or Mrs. Gore to bring Prince or Sheena Easton into their homes. Thanks to the Constitution, they are free to buy other forms of music for their children. Apparently, they insist on purchasing the works of contemporary recording artists in order to support a personal illusion of aerobic sophistication. Ladies, please be advised: The $8.98 purchase price does not entitle you to a kiss on the foot from the composer or performer in exchange for a spin on the family Victrola.
Taken as a whole, the complete list of PMRC demands reads like an instruction manual for some sinister kind of toilet training program to house-break all composers and performers because of the lyrics of a few. Ladies, how dare you?
While the wife of the Secretary of the Treasury recites "Gonna drive my love inside you" and Senator Gore's wife talks about "bondage" and "oral sex at gunpoint" on the CBS Evening News, people in high places work on a tax bill that is so ridiculous, the only way to sneak it through is to keep the public's mind on something else: Porn rock.
Is the basic issue morality? Is it mental health? Is it an issue at all? The PMRC has created a lot of confusion with improper comparisons between song lyrics, videos, record packaging, radio broadcasting, and live performances. These are all different mediums and the people who work in them have the right to conduct their business without trade-restraining legislation, whipped up like an instant pudding by "The wives of Big Brother."
Children in the vulnerable age bracket have a natural love for music. If as a parent you believe they should be exposed to something more uplifting than "Sugar Walls," support music appreciation programs in schools. Why have you not considered your child's need for consumer information? Music appreciation costs very little . . .

Basically the decision is up to the record label. They are the ones that edit the songs. The radio station, in most cases, will play the song that is serviced to them. If the label decided it doesn't like the word "bong" then it will edit it.
Some labels want to be as squeeky clean as possible. A song that is offensive to no one has a better shot at maximum exposure. Others are content to let the art stand as it was intended to be.
BTW.
I read today that the lyric in Money for Nothing is a reference to Vince Neil. Makes sense.

How are people so bitchy that they get their panties in a knot over a song playing on the radio, a song that was made 25 years ago and was directed at an individual.
