In Ipswich they're asking people to stay out of the water, as they've been seeing bull sharks chasing fish on the Ipswich Motorway. For the record, most people who know sharks consider bull sharks the most dangerous.

So the politicians are on TV warning about the 5.2m (downgraded from 5.5m), which is supposed to hit in a few hours. It would be about a meter higher than the current level, and definitely cause lots more damage. I've been looking at the data from the upstream gauges on both the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers, and I don't see it. It looks to me like the peak passed those gauges earlier today, and is happening in Brisbane right now. It may bump up slightly (well under 0.5m is my estimate) with the high tide, but I doubt it'll get much over 4.5m. Hopefully, I'm right, guess I'll find out when I wake up.

While a possibility, I kind of think this is likely an urban rumour gone crazy. Sure bull sharks can tolerate fresh water, but to swim against the flow into muddy/dirty water seems like a bit of a stretch.

Good luck. I have a buddy in Brisbane who is wandering the streets, as he had to leave his place on the west end.

Flames89, there's bull sharks well past that up the Brisbane River all the time, it's not a rarity, it's common knowledge that it's just part of their habitat. Bull sharks have no problem with fresh muddy water (the Brisbane and Bremer are always completely silty).

I hope your buddy's home isn't too bad. West End got it really bad.

My office:

Close call. Underground parking is flooded, but the water didn't make it to the first floor.

Here is a picture comparison to give some perspective of just how much the river has risen.

LOL at the kid wheelying his bike down Coronation Drive (one of the major arteries to the CBD).

Coincidentally, one of FusionX's pics is of the same place at the in-between flood level (it's on the riverside path just downstream of Oxley's On The River). Hopefully the path isn't damaged too badly, it's a really beautiful walkway / bikeway that helps people commute without vehicles. The webcam didn't show the peak flood level because it was at night, it was about a meter higher than that picture.

FusionX, post something, let us know you're ok, dude.

Just saw this on the news... Holy crap. Thankfully, both people apparently are alive and well.

Edit: the footage on the news was much more close up... in case it's not clear, there's a guy in a skiff trying to rescue the guy on the sailboat. The sailboat goes down and the mast takes out the skiff.

Edit: this is a better video. Lucky guys, one could have been clotheslined under, and the other smashed by the skiff flipping over.

So glad to see the sky is blue in that video Mel.

It has been a while since we saw anything like this in North America, and even longer since it has impacted a city the size of Brisbane so heavily.

I see that even down in Victoria there are major problems and the Great Ocean Road is closed in a number of places with fears it could be washed away in land/mudslides. Obviously it isn't as bad as Queensland, but it demonstrates the unimaginable scale of the effect of el nina on such a large area of Australia.

So what can make this worse? I don't know how about some bull sharks swimming down main street?

Pretty biblical. A thing on The Weather Network I read yesterday said the disaster area is the same area as the combined size of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Holy ####.

Bull sharks can, they can survive in salt and fresh water. What makes them worse is that they have the highest level of testosterone in sharks and can be very aggressive. The dirty part may cause a problem to their gills but I am not sure. They have been seen in the Missisippi river during run off so I would guess that they can handle it at least fairly well.

Bull sharks prefer murky shallow water. It is why they are responsible for the most attached on humans. They love the water where rivers meet the ocean.
