Are you sure about Final exam being worth 55%? I think there's a rule where final exam can't be more than 50% otherwise the semester work, midterm exam wold be useless. Not to mention some courses have "must pass final exam or fail the class" that would really make the semester work meaningless.
Also if you signed the check-in sheet I wouldn't worry about it being your fault. If you've thrown away your notes I'm sure the prof can lend you his or ask another classmate. It sucks but you will write it again.
Also who do ppl throw out their notes so damn quickly? if you've spent 4 years in one program, do your really remember it all? you might not need them but to throw em out couple weeks after you've written your exam is not smart at all.

I just graduated and I have almost all of my notes I've taken thru Uni. I even have quite a few notes from HS left over.

Yeah it is 55% of the final grade. No such rule here.
The reason for not having the notes is that I moved apartment buildings and some stuff was lost/misplaced in the process. I have most of my notes, but could not find this particular course. (Haven't even found the textbook yet).
I spoke to the prof today, he remembers me writing the exam. He told me when he was marking he did not see my test so "assumed that I didn't write it".
He said he will look for the exam and let me know the outcome. If he can't find it he said he would require me to potentially re-write it.
Hopefully I can throw in the option of taking my mark in class prior to final or some sort of paper instead.

Law School was 100% final exams. (There were a few essay courses after first year).
I think poor penmanship cost me 5-10% on every exam I wrote.
I have always thought that if you are ill prepared for an exam going in that signing in, talking to the prof as you hand in a blank test so they remember you and claiming they lost it after was a great idea!

Be honest.... This is what you did isn't it!
That might work in a class of 150+ where everyone is handing their #### in right away.
This right here is why i double and triple check EVERYTHING when it comes to school because at the end of the day the only person who cares about your schooling is you, the prof dosent care if you fail, the university dosent care. Just you.

Each faculty sets their own rules regarding the final exam. At my school, all engineering final exams have to be more than 50%. No finals can be less than 50%.
Its really easy for the University to just tell you to get lost, dont give up, show them whatever it takes. Hell, show them a Timmy's receipt from down the hall that you bought 10 minutes before the exam if thats what it takes. Show them the parking stub or train ticket for the day you were there.
Start small and work your way up if you have to.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I spoke to the prof today, he remembers me writing the exam.
Wouldn't hurt to have some proof of him saying that if things don't get resolved quickly. Also wouldn't hurt to start or continue to talk with a counselor, just explaining the situation and if for some reason the professor doesn't get things done you have that backup.
I have to agree with what others have said in this thread.
Try to get other people involved not just your professor.
Talk to your academic/program advisor, talk the the academic office, and so on. Don't rely on the professor to get things corrected.
Problem is that some people that I know would just show up to an exam, sign the attendance sheet, look over the exam, and at the end of the exam, not hand in the exam. They actually do this to give themselves an advantage by getting more studying time for the second exam they are suppose to write and knowing what questions are going to be on the exam. Any one can make up an excuse saying the prof 'lost' my exam, therefore I want to write another exam... you'd be surprised how many people would use this advantage. I also know people who get other people to write their exam and pay them.... they'd simply would do a make over to look exactly like the person in the ID who's suppose to write the exam.... I know pretty desperate and ####ed up.

I took engineering at U of C and all ours were 50% or less As far as i remember. Where did you go?

Engineering at Waterloo. Software Engineering program at Waterloo is run jointly by the faculty of engineering and faculty of math. One of the computer science courses which belongs to the faculty of math had a course where the final exam was less than 50%. The computer science students (they belong in the faculty of math) took this course as well and their final exam was less than 50%. The professor told us that in order to meet the faculty of engineering rules, the final exam had to be at least 50%.
I haven't had a course that had a final exam less than 50%.
I think at UofC, you can only have an exam worth 50% or if it is scheduled by the registrar. There are also restrictions about what dates and durations it can be. I had a class that had a exam worth 50% and was on a Sunday, and took 8 hours.
The entire class had to sign off on it because it was so long, it was not during exam week and it was worth 50%.
Best exam ever.
