I'm actually kinda happy about this trade now, hated it at first but it is growing on me. Pretty reassuring to read stuff like this from other players

Can't wait to watch McDavid rush around the defense, then send a drop pass towards Neal, and then realize that Neal hasn't made it into the zone yet.

Neal definitely didn't have this welcome and reputation with the players, even when things were optimistic after the signing.
Seeing all this makes me feel that while the on ice difference might end up being marginal, we're adding a more involved team guy that our players share a mutual respect with, and when you're talking about a team aiming at winning, having that enthusiasm from Lucic as well as his physicality may be a win at the end of the day. I just never sensed that Neal was about the team, and when his scoring dried up I didn't see him looking to offer something else with his game. At least Lucic has another tool in his box when he's not collecting points. I did always respect his attitude when in the media, even through the rigors of losing in that toxic environment.
Yeah, Edmonton can have fun trying to resurrect some semblance of the real deal, I'm glad we turned the page.
One thing's for sure - they're not getting the player they're hoping for/anticipating with that lame "short offseason" excuse.

To be fair lol, McD doesn't back check either.
If the aim is to win, then yes. If it's to collect points, then back checking isn't really a prerequisite there.
And yeah, if he couldn't keep up with our first or second lines, he'll be a mile behind the play constantly.

Excuse me if I've missed it; but what is the condition on the 3rd?

If Neal scores a minimum of 21 goals next season and outscores Lucic by a minimum of 10 goals, the Flames will get the Oilers' third rounder next year.
If both conditions are not met, it sounds like the Flames will not receive any draft picks.

Maroon, Kassian, and Chiasson all worked with McDavid. I think there is a decent chance Neal does as well.

It would be interesting to hear what some outside neutral party players have to say regarding their thoughts on this trade. They wouldn’t have the same direct locker room intel mind you. But asking close friends, Flames ambassadors or freshly minted teammates their thoughts is really only going to yield the obvious answers read above. What else would these people be saying, really.

Maroon maybe, but last year Neal made Kassian and Chiasson look like Dylan Larkin.

He did a brief hit on SN, bt yeah its been unusually quiet from the front office.
Normally when he makes a deal, particularly one as "big" as this, he is out in front of it a few hours later.
Of course the truth is, the optics of this are as bad as they could be and he is well aware of it. It may just be best for him to quietly take off for vacation for a few weeks and deal with things when he gets back and the rawness of it all has settled down.

Hahaha, yeah man. He's hiding!
I've seen him give 3 separate TV interviews and at least one radio spot. Press conference will probably be next week. What else were you hoping for? Lol

I don't think Brad is afraid of the optics, or even considers them to be poor lol. But yeah he should be formally clarifying the thought process here, as it could only help things.
At the end of the day though it's junk contract for junk contract. We need some more moves to help simmer down to realizing how inconsequential this trade actually is.

What?
No picks at all?
This is the worst trade of all time.

Considering that Lucic will be playing on our 4th line and Neal will be shotgunning McDavid I think its pretty safe that the condition will be met.

I find this funny only because others have said the conditions are so specific they're very unlikely to be met.
Me, I'm leaning towards "there's no way to know even how likely this is". So many variables.
What I will say is, at least it's an interesting clause It will definitely give the fans something extra to talk about for at least half the season. Kind of makes me wish more trades had weird conditionals like this.
