I mean it was one guy who said they wouldn't be a playoff team. Almost everyone had them in the playoffs, just most people had them in the 4-6 seed range which was pretty reasonable. It wasn't just losing Kawhi, it was that Kawhi cost DeRozan too and whatever you think of DeMar, they were still a top 3 team in the East with him. That was a lot to replace, but they did. This year though you have to replace Ibaka and Gasol and that's a lot to replace on defense and with Ibaka the ability to elite small ball with him at the 5.
I still think the Raps make the playoffs, but even ignoring who is better in the East there are at least 4 teams in the West who are better than the Raps too. I mostly want to see what the young guys can do, outside of tanking for a top guy having a lot of assets to trade is the next best approach, so having another FVV-level asset to trade would be nice.

And it played out exactly like that. And now this season they will descend further due to other teams progressing, and more so if Siakam isn't able to regain form.

Yeah it seems like it was mostly American media who hadn't been paying attention to the Raptors. Quite a few had them as a bubble team sitting around .500.
I don't think it's fair to say they weren't contenders last year though. I mean they finished with the 2nd best record in the league and almost made it to the conference finals.
They looked pretty sloppy tonight though but it's the first game of the season so not going to worry yet.

Final scores from the rest of the games on Wednesday night.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/...res/2020-12-23
The Kings-Nuggets game was the only one that went to OT and it was a buzzer beater.
"Harrison Barnes stole the ball from Jokic with 2.6 seconds left and Buddy Hield tipped in his miss at the buzzer, sending the Sacramento Kings storming off the court with a stunning 124-122 win over the Denver Nuggets in overtime Wednesday night."
Antetokounmpo misses a free throw which would've tied the game and send it into OT, the Celtics win by one point in reg time. There were 4 other games that were decided by 7 points or less.
Sportsnet had 3 games on, two on SN and one on SN1.

Interesting that Thomas seems like he may have moved ahead of Davis on the depth chart, at least for now (although wouldn't be surprised to see Nurse go back and forth between them). It makes sense that with the team potentially weaker on offense this year, Thomas's shotmaking and gravity may be more important than Davis' disruptive defense.

Brandon Ingram has turned into a really nice player. Too bad him and Zion don't get a whole lot of support today, but they still make it an interesting game at least.

Baynes already looking like an upgrade over Gasol, but for a guy who’s trim he really should be quicker moving up the court. He just seems to be off the mark speed wise. Gotta get some more time working on his cardio.

The NBA is a unique league unlike the other major sports in that no matter how embarrassing you think your favorite franchise is, there's one franchise is simply out-embarrasses them all.

That third quarter seemed rough. Missed tons of open threes, and missed free throws. Nurse looking a bit lazy on the whistle as well. Siakam playing with aggression at times which is good to see. Anunoby’s gotta be better.

Naa. The only time I’ve seen that many missed layups was this past playoffs. I’ll chalk it as early season rust but Nurse should’ve utilized his bench more with guys who were scoring. But he likely wanted the rust to wear off as you need the starters to be in the game as the season progresses. Ugly missed shots though.

God that was a rough first two games. Nurse and Siakam were absolutely furious at the officials after the game.
Boucher was the brightest spot of the game. 7 huge blocks and a good game all around. Vanvleet with a nice bounce back. I thought Siakam played better and with much more energy and pace than he did against the Pelicans.
On the flipside, Powell & Anunoby stunk badly again.

22-10 with 7 blocks is a pretty rare stat-line... just about everyone else who's ever put up that statline has been an all-star level player, and even fewer have done it with a mix of 3-point shooting. And the impressive thing about Boucher's shooting is that he's not just shooting from the corner or above the key, but out on the wing, which is typically the harder spot to shoot from, and puts more stress on a defense.
Obviously he needs consistency to be a real impact player, and he'll probably always lack the size to match up against big, skilled Cs like Embiid. But I'd be really happy if he just ends up being a solid backup C/PF this year.

thought the boxscore was broken or something, but no - it really is 77-27 at the halftime between Mavs and Clippers. Dear lord.

Clippers are trash without Kawhi. Now that’s not a surprise most teams are worse without their star but the clippers are a very shallow team.

These scores are bizarre today. Before today it was like the Nets are unbeatable and Clippers are great. One loses to the Hornets and the other is blown out by Dallas. Orlando somehow is 3-0, Bucks get blown out by the knicks, Sixers being destroyed by Cleveland, Warriors are neck and neck with the Bulls, Celtics are trying to lose to the Pacers. Just a very odd day in basketball.
