Anyone been to Ruth's Chris in the Calgary tower?
I was there on Wednesday night and had one of the best meals I've ever had. They cook the steak in an 1800 degree broiler and serve it to you on a 500 degree plate with a nob of herb butter on top. When you cut a piece of steak and touch it to your plate it actually sizzles. I ordered a medium rare beef tenderloin + stuffed chicken breast combo and it was absolutely perfectly cooked.
Its one of the more expensive restaurants I've ever been to. The total bill for four people after tip was just shy of $400, but if your are sparing no expense, this is an excellent choice. The staff were very friendly and helpful, yet not intrusive or annoying. The service was timed extremely well. All of the food came to us fresh and hot.
EDIT: Plus since it was my birthday dinner I got my dessert for free. Creme Brulee!

Ooohhh, and if you decide you don't want to go to smugglers you can always just go next door to Bolero and have all you can eat meat!
Oh, and now thanks to this thread, I've had to call everyone I know to see who wants to go for a steak dinner tonight.

Ruth's Chris is an American Chain that gets their beef from the US... IT is imported i think. Local = better

I've heard the actully started to use Alberta beef there, but that was just a rumor, so it may not be true. It'd be worth asking though.

They serve both. All of their "Classic" meals come with USDA Prime midwestern beef. Yet they also have an "Alberta menu" where you can get various cuts of AAA Alberta beef such as NY striploins, beef tenterloin, filet mignon, and I think a Rib-eye. My beef tenderloin was Alberta beef.
They say the USDA prime is corn-fed giving it a sweeter and more mild taste, where the Alberta beef is grain-fed giving it a more robust and "meatier" flavour.

The decor is what I love about Caesars. You feel like you have walked through a time machine into the mid 70's there. There are only 2 restaraunts I have never had a bad meal at:
Caesars Willow Park and The Keg.
I have been to some "supposedly" high end Steak Houses in the US and never has one even come close to the Quality of a 29.95 Sirloin special at the Keg.
If price is no object, Caesars, but the Keg will not dissapoint either. MMMMMM Steak neptune.

The Keg downtown is quite nice, if you're looking for good value.

Just a general FYI - if it's a "hip" place downtown (Murietta's, Chophouse, Ruth, etc), odds are it's overpriced and poor value, mainly designed to extract your dollars. Murietta's was a great place to take dates for a drink if I wanted to ensure 1st date sackability , but I would never go there for a meal where I am only concerned about the quality of my food...

Maybe it has gone downhill in recent years but the food there used to be quite good.

I wouldn't call Ruth's a "hip" place. Its a very high-end establishment that prides itself on great service and even better food. Really elegant decor too. I agree with the Chophouse comment though, I was very underwhelmed the last time I went there. Not trying to discount your opinion here, I just feel like I should defend Ruth's Chris because I was so satisfied with my meal there, even for the high prices.

I'm so happy that no one has mentioned the Chicago Chophouse yet.
I've always felt that it is one of the worst restaraunts in Calgary as far as value goes.
My theory has always been that it is the place that people with bad taste in restaraunts take people to impress them with their taste in restaraunts.
You have all restored my faith in CP.

Who owns it? That should tell you all you need it to know - all of his establishments (Zen 8 if it still exists) are vastly overpriced mediocrity.

I'm not saying it isn't good, but you paid twice what you would have at Caesar's Willow Park. Since I have yet to find a better steak anywhere in the world, anything more expensive is overpriced. I remember taking Mrs. Impaler #2 to whatever the most expensive steakhouse at Bellagio in Vegas is (can't recall the name). Yeah, it was good, and the setting is great, but it wasn't as good as Caesar's and it was $350US back when the Canadian dollar was $0.75US.

For sure. All of his places are style over substance. Belgo is pretty good for an after work drink though. However, the Chophouse is just a terrible steak house. Poorly prepared, overpriced crap.

Reef & Beef, in the N.E. is surprisingly good.
Longveiw Steakhouse is still my favorite though, if your up to a day trip.
Ah crap, NM.
I really should read the whole thread title.
As you were.
