Always loved Metal, but I my metal was from the 80's. Took a pretty big tangent into death metal and whatnot that I just wasn't into. That said, some of the granddaddy's of metal in my day had some awesome tunes.
I was going to post a link to Judas Priest's "The Green Manalishi" but found it was removed due to "copyright infringement". Strangely enough, I found a Fleetwood Mac version of it! Didn't know they did the original (or did they?) Pretty heavy for Fleetwood Mac in those days. Like the Priest version way better, but it was interesting to see this one.
I'm gonna go wayyy back (and show my age) and name-drop some bands that should be checked into:
Anvil (were just slightly ahead of their time in the Thrash realm as it coulda been them instead of Metallica leading the charge... oh and Canadian!)
Celtic Frost (no further info required)
Sacrifice (fantastic Canadian Thrash band)
D.B.C. (another fantastic Canadian Thrash band that kinda went a bit Voivod-ish)
Coroner (amazing prog-ish Metal band)
Anacrusis (ubber under-appreciated tech-Thrash band)
Tank (NWOBHM - go git some)
Atheist (prog-death at some of its finest)
Carcass (Heartwork is the pinnacle of Death with some melody)
Kreator (zee Germanz are coming!!!)
Sodom (zee Germanz are coming part II!!!)
Death Angel (ubber-fantastic Thrash band with a lot of other influences thrown in like some funkiness)
the smalls (Alberta band... gawd I mess 'em. check out any of their discs although the 1st two are very much underprodced)
I could go on and on... my passion for Metal (and music in general is crazy... just ask my wife about my CD collection).
And just to f___ things up go listen to Dwight Yoakam's Gone album (Dwight is right up there after Cash for me).
Oh and on a somewhat related note, use these guys (www.theendrecords.com) when buying yer Metal as they carry some amazing shlte and they have cheap S&H as well... and on the low-low they also declare package value low so you can avoid duty.
Avoid rapists like HMV, Futureshop, etc. like the plague... unless of course they have 2 fer type sales.
ps - go grab the new Melvins - (A) Senile Animal
because the Melvins are gods.
I've always been a huge fan of Metal, as anybody who's ever seen me drivin' around in the Metallitruck would know. I've been into all the metal sub-genres at one time or another but most enjoy the more coherent bands over the screech and hollar death metal. Some of my suggestions:
DragonForce has a similar sound to Rhapsody. Each Rhapsody album tells a continuing fantastic tale about the heroes and evils that battle in the land of Ansalon. They blend rapid guitars and powerful vocals with epic orchestration and choral performances.
One of my favorite black metal bands. Dimmu Borgir has a thick, heavy sound that is often juxtaposed with seemingly out of place instruments like chimes and music boxes to give them an eerie twist. The vocals stretch from deep and gravelly, to electronically distroted to clear and beautiful, similar to Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory.
This band is a joint side project from members of Iced Earth and Blind Guardian, two bands which are both definatly worth checking out on their own. Fast drums and guitars. I just love this band and can't hype them enough.
he's got a lot of wierd stuff, rare box sets, he's first in line for the collectibles, hangs out with these dudes - plays xbox live with fear factory's drummer all the time!
so if anyone wants anything rare, collectible, strange, drop him a line.
EDIT: he specializes in european stuff, finnish, scandinavian, german, austrian, etc.
Anyone know anything about Mastodon? I heard one song online and I've read about them..people seem to love them.

Mastadon is pretty much going to take the throne that Slayer sits upon out from under them. I have seen them 5-6 times in the last couple years, they seem to love playing Austin, Tx. always drop off the Slayer tour to do a one off in Austin. They are amazing, there newest album is good, but the album Leviathan is easily one of the best metal albums ever. They signed a deal with Warner Bros. for 4 mil. unheard of for a metal act that will never see mainstream success, because Warner Bros. knows they will have a Slayer like following their whole career.
Some names left out of this thread... All these bands take a different approach to metal and I think they are all pretty amazing..
Converge, High on Fire (Matt Pike from Sleep's other band), Crowpath, Kylesa (crusty metal ex members of the band Damad), Rwake, Daughters, Red Sparrowes (members of Isis and Neurosis), Isis, Burnt by the Sun (Dave Witte is the best drummer in the world), Today is the Day, The Red Chord, Phobia (grind gods), Mare...
well, while we're at it - earth, woods of ypres, sunn 0))), boris, merzbow, sHeavy, tenhi, how like a winter, saturnus, novembers doom, my dying bride, borknagr, the ocean, avernus, paradise lost, katatonia, cathedral, om, swallow the sun
here's a sample from one band i'm absolutely hooked on right now... (its live so the sound isn't TOO great) Saturnus - Rain Wash Me (Live) http://youtube.com/watch?v=hiXGBA43esw

I listen to Hard Attack on Sirius Sattelite Radio all the time. I have heard some awsome tunes from Bands that I didn't know existed recently like Carcus, and Celtic Frost. My favorite show on Hard Attack is Beyond the Pit, which plays 1 hour of Death Metal every night at 9pm Mountain.
Normally I listen to bands like Six Feet Under, Slayer, Hate Breed, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Soul Fly, Mushroom Head. The heavier the better.
Anyways... I have always preferred the 80's metal... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth.... etc...
of new bands... i like Dragonforce quite a bit as it is a drawback to the "classics"..
Death metal has never really been my thing.... i like to hear what the band is saying to go along with the slashing guitars... i always joke that they are probably screaming about petting kittens and frolicking through meadows... that is probably what i would do anyways...
I STRONGLY suggest that if you haven't yet, everyone check out Ayreon's album "The Human Equation". something there for everyone. hands down, my favorite concept album of all time. a couple choice tracks to check out:

I could care less what they are saying. As long as it sounds deep and evil. My 7 year old daughter loves Six Feet Under. Allthough I can only play certain songs because you can understand when they say the F word. When we get in the truck she allways tells me to put in "Deep voice" music.
I love a lot of the old metal stuff as well. Metallica is god. But I listen to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, stuff like that.

I saw Misery Signals and Norma Jean a few weeks ago and for anyone who hasn't heard them definetly check them out.
I downloaded the new Killswitch Engage cd, and it's definately a good album. However, I still like "The End Of Heartache" more, but "As Daylight Dies" is still an awesome cd. I'm seeing them on Monday, and I can't wait.
oh wow, this blew me away. new band called Vainglory with a female vocalist that nails classic thrash vocals better than most men do. i didn't believe it was actually a woman until looking them up. entire album sounds killer though
The myspace pages have better song samples. Junix for Ahnabith, and most of the samples for MoC have been remastered and in some circumstances, completely recorded in our very own TPM studios. Enjoy! Also if you like what you here, these bands can use your supports, often playing shows at Vern's, The Underground, etc.
We'll be starting our first full length album and label contracts with one of the above mentioned bands very soon. Recently we have just been helping bands with EP's.

Not sure they are new. The singer is new it seems but they put an album out in 2001 with a male singer.
Another female vocalist you will not believe is female from just listening fronts Arch Enemy. A band started by the ex-Carcass guitarist Michael Arnott and his brother. Replaced their first vocalist with Angela Gassow in 2001...and they are better for it.

I have heard that a few times on Hard Attack. Had no idea it was a female. Sounds not bad.
