I'm in the scorched earth rebuild camp so I'd trade him. If someone is willing to overpay trade him in the offseason, if not let him have a bounce back year and see what you can get at the deadline.

To me, he would not be on the block but anyone is available for the right offer

Rasmus Andersson is a homegrown top four defenceman who plays in all situations.
Near as I can tell, he’s missed four games in the last six years.
His offensive game isn’t as dynamic as everyone hoped it would be when he was drafted, but he’s solid.
They should be in no rush to move on from him unless the player has specifically demanded a trade.
He’s been a good soldier and done basically everything the team has asked with no drama.
If by this time next year, he wants an extension in the range of Hanifin, they should give it to him - you need to reward guys who’ve played well here and want to stay with the offer of long term security.

I wouldn’t. We have no defencemen anymore. We also need leaders

One thing is if you trade all of the vets, you may be looking at an Edmonton/Buffalo decade long rebuild

I'd say keep him unless he wants out too. Which is entirely plausible.
I like Rasmus. He's been one of the hits of the Flames drafting system.
We will see as the next season rolls along where his head will be at. He's young enough to stick around but old enough to want to compete for a cup and not sit through a re-tool or whatever we or they want to call it.
Long and Short of it, it's up to Rasmus what he wants to do moving forward. And his decision will rest upon what Conroys plan is in the next 2 seasons.

No, its not a rebuild. To move out another top defenseman would push it to that category.

If he wants to stay through the rebuild then absolutely. He can lead the team and he'll be a top 4 defenseman for the next 8 years for sure. If he'll take an 8 year deal at a reasonable rate to be a lifetime flame then I'm all about that.

However, the organization's plan is for a quick rebuild. Andersson was a bit of a late bloomer and is still getting better. The Flames' current plan is likely to start buying again in the offseason in 2025. Rasmus will be expected to be a main part of the defence then.
I could also see the Flames doing something totally wild, like skewering the rebuild by trading Anderson for a win-now forward piece. I don't see them trading him for futures though.

The Flames are already going to get a very high 1st round pick next year.
They’re going to be running with Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar in net - Wolf needs to see a metric #### ton of rubber next year to set himself up for a decade’s worth of elite play.
After Andersson and Weegar, the defense is entirely comprised of wildcards and waiver fodder.
The forwards are going to struggle to generate offense at 5v5 because they are not, as a group, fast enough.
The powerplay could be elite, when it has the chance to operate.
Whoever they pick at 9 isn’t going to make the team this year.
Honzek isn’t going to make the team after losing a full year of development to injury.
For the third year in a row, we will enter camp wondering what kind of impact Pelletier will have.
Is Zary an NHL C? We’ll have all year to find out.
I’m expecting a lot of 5-4/4-3 losses, and a top-5 selection.

All trade offers should be considered, but to Trade Ras you need players in return, it would probably need to be an offer that feels like a steal of a hockey trade for Calgary, because the other team has cap issues.
If you include Stone, in the past 12 months we lost basically a good NHL 2nd and 3rd pairing, and really only replaced 1 of them with a proven player. Not sure that it's a great idea to start cutting into the 1st pairing too.

He's my favorite Flames defenceman, so I'd prefer the Flames extend him for another contract. Obviously, it all depends on Andersson and if he ever wants to leave, the Flames will need to move him out. If I were Conroy, I'd have that conversation with him soon to find out so Conroy doesn't get surprised.
The Flames D is not good enough as it stands today after removing their entire 2nd pair and Conroy does not want to bottom out, so I don't think Conroy has any interest in trading Andersson away and further depleting the group.

Yes we need to trade him. No more of these long term contracts for plus 30's paying for what they did in their 20's.
We will just end up back in the same situation again.
It's a business and the goal is to win, not be loyal. You don't get loyalty anywhere, look at Vegas shrewd moves and they get a cup.

Yes absolutely I would if the price was right. He looks to be slowing down and know this will get some flack but he downright looks lazy out there a lot of nights. Don't see him getting better and I see a fast decline in his career so sell high.

You can’t just say you’re going to operate like Vegas while having none of the other advantages that allow Vegas to operate the way they do.

What if it is a contract length and cap hit similar to what he has now? I think that would be worth it. You will never know the ask until you are able to have that conversation. I'd be willing to give him a similar contract to what Weegar is on right now.

I mean why on earth would we want a solid young D who hasn't hit his prime yet on our roster? Those are the guys we want to get rid of, amirite?

Agree, good take. Perhaps a Utah (still feels weird to type that) trade for Geekie?

Too many unknown variables for anyone to answer:
(1) Does he want to stay?
(2) What is his value today?
(3) If he wants to stay, will he demand a 8 year extension, and at what price?
(4) If he demands an 8 year extension, what is management's view on that?
frankly, I wouldn't be wanting to give him an 8-year extension, so unless he's willing to accept less term, I'm moving him what the time is best. I don't know when that time is.
