I signed up as well. Seems like an interesting concept. Also seems like things get more interesting after you get to level 5.

I signed up the day before I posted this and I am now at level 7. I joined the British Navy (it's an off site forum thing but it makes the army more organized) and have been fighting in the war with Norway. By making lots of friends and talking on the forums, I rarely have to buy anything as people donate food, gifts, guns and even gold to me. Now I have to decide on which political party join. I cannot plan my run on congress yet as being in the Navy we are expected to live abroad fighting wars and working for specific companies in exchange for guns and gold.
To all those that signed up, don't forget to work and train each day. If you are having trouble affording food, message me and I will donate some to you as I have about 10 pieces.
Cheers again,
Magic.

Oh dear how did I miss this thread? My two online addictions, CP and eRep have finally come together.
For the person who asked when a new day starts, the game clock is Pacific time, so the new game starts at 1:00 Mountain time.
PM me in game with other questions or friend requests. Joe Smith VI

You eat at the start of a day, which at the start is basically a gain of 1 wellness per food quality (1-5). Training and working take 1 wellness each. If you just have level 1 food, you will lose 1 wellness a day while doing both.
I went and grabbed a job that pays enough to buy level 2 food so I can do both and keep a constant wellness, until I can get into a battle and use the hospital.

So, after I sign up, I get a job, and just leave it at that?
My job that I have now is supposed to be paying me $15/day, but they don't have any money to pay me right now. What do I do about that?

I had the same situation, I resigned and found another job (look for more stars) that pays less but is actually able to pay me. For the first little while you're going to be barely affording your food let alone any extras.

Working at a higher quality (higher stars) job will take more wellness from you each day. It is best to stick with a job with a Q1 company (1 Star) until you are older in the game and can afford higher Q food or a house.

You need to train for the Army as well.

I don't have level 2 yet, which is required to train for the Army. What do I do about that?

You should be able to get the 7 experience points (XP) to move to level 2 by getting your first job (5 XP) and by uploading an avatar (2 XP) after that, working each day will get you 1 XP, eating food each night (automatically) will get you 1 XP.
So to simplify, day one: find a job, work at it, upload an avatar, buy 1 Q1 food, eat it (automatically done) - 9 XP.
Day 2: work, train, buy food, eat it - 3 more XP.
It takes about a week until you can fight. Fighting will give you 2 XP per fight and will allow you to use a hospital to raise your wellness. Fighting will make the game considerably more interesting.
Also, fighting will help you to quickly get to level 6 where you will get 5 gold.

Thanks for helping me explain how to survive early on. Great stuff.
Also I was on the island this summer, stayed in Parksville for the weekend then went surfing in Tofino. It is the most beautiful place I have ever been too.
