Terminating his contract would give the dumpster fire a million in cap relief.

Yeah the NHLPA would fight this, regardless of the optics. Players have been suspended for this kind of thing in the past and as far as I can recall the contracts were not terminated.

Coaches can be fired mid season for whatever reason you like. This is an on ice incident, and was dealt with as such.

I'm not above demanding that the Oilers organization be summarily, arbitrarily and unfairly punished.

Should cost the oil a draft pick or 2

There is zero chance on earth the Oilers would be permitted to terminate his contract over this.
That said, Manning might not actually be an NHLPA member at the moment. He'd likely be represented by the PHPA.

Specifically their first round picks from 2014 and 2015.

I asked this question with the Bill Peter's situation and I will ask it again, what are the consequences we are setting forward here?? Some say contract termination, sure, why not, he is also a marginal player in some ways.
If and when a racial slur is used by a super star player and a player in a massive market, will everybody also be on board?
I find people's opinions of the matter really do change depending what side things fall on.

He's on a NHL deal according to Capfriendly.

Well, Oilers forfeiture of draft selections would certainly be the humane thing to do.

Why is there a Flames logo in the thread title?

I have heard from inside sources that it was not actually a racial slur, that was what the league used to save face. What was said was actually much worse.
The nearly verbatim quote was "you're trash, you're garbage, you're arrogant and have no respect. What are you, an Oiler?"
The notion of calling someone an 'Oiler' when they clearly don't wear the jersey is extremely offensive to any sane hockey player and should be punished as such.

I would be fine with equal punishment, yes. If there was an avenue toward contract termination (I suspect there is not) I would be all for it.

I think racism could just as easily be seen as a material breach of conduct considering that Richard could argue his dependency on the drug was the result of injuries he faced while playing for the Kings while being a racist piece of #### just makes you a racist piece of ####.
Of course Richards had the NHLPA an arbitration brewing before the settlement was reached - which apparently pissed off a lot of the league.
So on that basis, I think the Oilers could easily terminate the contract, the NHLPA would be forced to file a grievance, and likely a settlement would be reached prior to arbitration being forced. With that said, I doubt they go that route.

And the fact one was a criminal act for transporting a Class 1 narcotic, and one was a reprehensible act for using a slur, pretty much the same thing.

Yup. Aside from the fact that it is literally impossible to argue this puts Manning in material breach of his contract, the NHL and its minor leagues already have a history of relatively minor fines and suspensions for slurs. The NHL doesn't work on precedents, but the legal system sure does.
Sorry, Oiling, but "material breach" has a meaning. And that meaning isn't "I don't like what he did."

If Kassian were accused of this the Oiler media would justify it. Just saying, they're actually that far up their team's rears.
They probably won't grill Manning much for this either.
