I think the reason why it felt totally opposite from Cloverfield is that it was never intended to be a sequel or even related to the Cloverfield universe. From my understanding the movie was shot and completed as a film titled
The Cellar back in early 2015. It was test screened and eventually shelved. Abrams got involved and they did a few re-writes and re-shoots to tie in the ending to Cloverfield.
I enjoyed it for what it was but the connection definitely felt forced to me.
