Seems like it'd be fun.
As a thought exercise though, this is pretty depressing.

Is that because women are over-estimating the awfulness of men, or under-estimating the pain of a bear mauling?

Well...I think its more nuanced than that. See...'Men' is a broad spectrum ranging from despicable to amazing whereas Bears just operate on instinct.
A Bear could do anything.
But instead of saying 'A Man' that you're trapped with, what if you said..."Obama" or "Jerry Seinfeld" it completely changes the entire narrative.
See a Bear is actually a more or less standard entity, its an animal and it has behaviours and you more or less know what its going to do.
"A Man" could be anything. You could be with Bear Grylls, the Pope or a member of the Insane Clown Posse. Depending on which you get the outcome is going to be drastically altered as opposed to...with the bear you sort of know what you're going to get.

When I ride my bike or run on the trails by the river and end up behind a woman I'll let them know when I'm turning if our pace is similar so they don't think I'm following them. A lot of men are creepy.

Why has no one asked what type of bear? If it's a black bear, you're probably fine. If it's a polar bear you're absolutely f***ed.

Pandas aren't bears. But hell, if Panda was an option I'm taking that over trapped in the woods alone.

That's not true? Polar bears are in forests all the time. If they had to live there year round forever that would be a problem but it's not like the moment they step off the ice they're doomed.

I laughed, but I do say "I'm not following you I'm turning at x". That makes it better, right?

If you're in jeans and a black hoodie running behind them you're probably scaring them. If you're in a running get up and close enough to pass them just pass them or pace back until your turn. I imagine you're scaring the #### out of them by announcing your presence and future plans. Heart is in the right place, but maybe just do you and let them do them without talking to them.
I don't know, though. I'm a big person and also cognizant of my potential to scare women in certain situations.

How is being in the woods akin to being in a trap? Plenty of firewood and bears taste like pork.

If its Grylls you are probably no more than 5 minutes from the highway. And maybe 10 from the hotel.

It depends on the scenario.
If its a wooded area where I wouldn't expect to see another human and suddenly there is a random human stranger there, that would be a little unnerving. I'd probably rather know there was a bear there than another human. If it's a scenario, like say a plane crash, and I was stranded with another person, it would probably be better than being trapped with a bear.
As someone else mentioned, it depends on the bear as well. If it was one of those circus bears that rides a bicycle, that would be perfect. It would give you some entertainment to pass the time, but it would also probably be easier to kill than a wild bear. You could then harvest the meat and wear the hide for warmth. I guess you could do that with another human as well, but it is generally frowned upon and could have more severe legal repercussions.

Honestly that sounds weird. Most everyone runs with earbuds anyway so they’re probably not hearing you clearly.
Just go about your run. If you find yourself running at the same pace, just adjust.
