It's pretty common for mediocre movies about musicians/actors/hollywood to get oscar nods. At an event that's all about the industry blowing itself, movies about the industry blowing itself do pretty well.

and the filming of the musical scenes, especially live-aid was amazing.
but agreed. average movie at best.
As for black panther over mission impossible and infinity war.
I understand it, even if it is blatant pandering to a demographic that has been marginalized for too many years. the academy is still stinging over being too white.

Yup. That was easily the best documentary I saw last year. Beautiful film.

Shoplifters was my favourite of the ones I've watched, but Roma seems like a guaranteed lock considering it's a BP nom at the same time.

"Roma" gives Netflix it's first best picture nomination (and first for any streaming service).

Black Panther was not even the best Marvel movie of last year. Infinity War was better, maybe not by a lot, but definitely better than Black Panther. Heck, Ant Man and the Wasp was better than Propaganda for Wakanda.

Infinity War was better, by allot. Black Panther was run of the mill Marvel Fair.
Infinity Was was simply the best movie of the year. The Academys lack of credibility was an objective judge of movie quality laid out bare for everyone to seen.

Wasn't Manchester by the Sea (Amazon) the first nomination for a streaming service?

No, Manchester By the Sea received a wide theatrical release. For example, I saw the movie at Eau Claire in Calgary. Roma on the other hand screened at a commercial theater in Los Angeles county before the end of the year just to obtain eligibility for the Oscars. Because of the audience reception to Roma, Netflix has decided to screen Roma in 70 mm, but only in major US cities and cities with a high number of Academy voters, and only in select movie houses because they are circulating just one print. Unlike Manchester By the Sea, most moviegoers will never see Roma on the big screen.

Great interview with the writer-director of one of the best movies of the year.
Paul Schrader's very candid, conflicted feelings over his first Oscar nomination

You know, this is a very difficult conversation because I have never really respected the Academy for their choices. On the other hand, I'm enormously gratified that they have selected me.

Win Palme d’Or = don't win Oscars.

It's a shame "The Death of Stalin" is not in the best picture category.

Nice to see finally a movie featuring a climactic CGI fist flight between two men in cat suits getting Oscar recognition.

Wasn’t Death of Stalin a 2017 film that wasn’t widely released until 2018? Agreed it was a huge snub though. The Oscars have no love for comedies.

I find that my mood affects my perception of movies to a degree far higher than it should.
I really enjoyed BlackkKlansman all the way through although I found it incredibly sobering because it demonstrates how far we thought we had come as a society and how far we have regressed from that perception.

Satisfied that all three main actresses in the Favourite were nominated.
All deserving.
Also Rami Malek.

Given the 2018 Oscars were the worst viewed ever, down 20% from 2017 one has to wonder if Black Panther's nomination was more done to try and draw some mainstream interest. It will be interesting to see if it works.
