GG got them into the POs once, and had to turn the team around to do it. Gilbert was worse, and Hay might have been as well. I’d argue Risebrough as well. Look at the world class team he had, and look at the result.

Babchuck didn't produce a ton, but he had a cannon. If you want to put a useless d-man up on the board, I'm going to suggest Chris Butler is a better option.
However, he's not the worst Flame of all time. If you want someone who truly brought nothing positive to the team, and was shockingly bad compared to his teammates (and reputation), I'm going to suggest Hall of Famer, Vezina winner, and member of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players, Grant Fuhr. The Oiler stink loses him points right off the bat, but he doesn't need any help there. When you look at his stats compared to his teammates, it's shocking how much worse he was than Freddie Brathwaite (who I loved, but really wasn't a starting goalie) and a handful of games from 22 year old J.S. Giguere. More than a full point of GAA worse than either of them, and .049 worse save percentage than Freddie, .058 worse than Giguere... and for some reason he played a quarter of the season.
|
This is the winner.
Consider that he was so bad that despite the Hall of Fame career, the team didn't even want to put him in net for the entire final game of the season and his career -- against the Oilers, no less. I think he got the third period and that was it. It was a meaningless game but they didn't want to embarrass him.

How in the world does the Russian named German end up on somebody's worst Flame list? Does not compute.

I hated David Hale. Felt like he gave the puck away all the time and was a complete liability. He also set the record for the longest start to a career without a goal.

I would have said Jeff Friesen, but for me it was James Neal. He was useless. Go and look at the goals that he scored for the Flames that year. Lucky goals. All of them. Remember after the PK, Peters would always throw Neal with Gaudreau and Monahan - they had many minutes together all season, and guess how many points that line put up. ZERO. In all those minutes, it was zero. Neal would neuter any line. He didn't play defence, he barely played physical. He was slow. He didn't have leadership. Didn't shoot well. Didn't pass well.
The icing was the playoffs, when he argued about his time in front of the entire team, and there he was on 'controller disconnect' mode trying not bothering on the backcheck on Colorado's game winning goal.
Not Ericckson, not Hulse, not Friesen. It was Neal.
