They are saying they will give kids a chance. No pavs means more chance to put up PP points. He will have arb rights next year so it’s a bet on himself with a clear shot at improving stats.

He had FIFTY SIX POINTS last year. He signs for $1M?! That's completely ridiculous. Sharks get away with robbery.

All I can say is that this had better come back to bite SJ in the ass in some fashion.
God, I hate the Sharks.

This is a gentlemen's agreement or soft circumvention of the cap. There's an agreement place for a bigger money deal with term that he can sign when he's eligible.

I'm amazed that the PA didn't hit the roof when they saw this deal.

totally dodgy if that's all to the deal...
don't all contracts have to be approved by the NHL central office? i wonder if they'll poke around a bit further...

I wonder if the NHLPA has ever considered filing a grievance against a contract for being too small?

There can't be. He's not eligible to get any performance bonuses.
As has already been said, the only way this makes any sense is if there's a handshake deal for him to sign a big-money, long-term deal on January 1, but that's a risky move for the kid to make.

I’m really surprised there isn’t more uproar about this from the NHLPA. At best this is under the table cap circumvention and sets a really bad precedent for other negotiations.

When can he sign his next deal, in January?

He either has a really bad agent or really likes SJ. Could he have been offersheeted? He could have gotten 1.395AAV with zero compensation going back to the Sharks.

LeBlanc was RFA offer-sheet eligible, but I think this might help illumine a long established truth in the NHL: most players are simply not interested in exploring offer-sheets and would prefer to remain with their drafting team.

It is fun to assume he turned down an offersheet from Edmonton and signed with SJ at way less $.
But other than that it's still weird.
