Matthews is a legit candidate as he was 2nd in takeaways and blocked shots amongst all forwards. His 2-way game has really evolved but Barkov is still the best.

The Selke has typically gone to a forward who has pretty good offensive production, but is an elite checker at the same time. That means your plus/minus is probably at least going to be on the positive side of the ledger.

So, no, it's not a flawed stat when you're talking about the friggin Selke award. If you're asking for a bottom 6 plug center who can eat tough minutes and not sink your team too much...well then I guess we need a new award for that.

It's ridiculous that these guys couldn't find at least one forward better than Jordan Frickin' Staal to vote for.

Barkov wins the Selke. His second win. Likely a perennial nominee if he's healthy, and the odds on favorite to win now that Bergeron has retired, evident based on the points below.

It wasn't close. He got 1817 points and 165 first place votes. The next closest was Jordan Staal(!) at 539. Interestingly, Sam Reinhart was in 4th place with 440 points, but had the 2nd most first place votes at 12.

A nice nod to both Backlund and Coleman as they both garnered a handful of votes (15 and 13 points each), placing them 20th and 21st in the voting.

If you wanted to know one of Spector's votes, you can be assured that he's the one guy that gave a 4th place vote to Connor McDavid. Jesus H. Christ...

Lots of hometown votes, I assume. First place votes to Miller, RObertson, Marner, Backlund, Trochek, and Karlsson. People voted for Hagel, Kerfoot, Martinook, Fiala, and Foerster.

Last year's top-10 Selke voting made sense. Almost all of the players in serious contention were doing the defensive heavy lifting on their teams - e.g. Bergeron, Barkov, Staal, Backlund, Kopitar, Eriksson-Ek, Hischier, Lindholm, etc.

This year's voting looks pretty random. Eriksson-Ek barely cracks the top-10 despite putting up 30 goals to go with his defensive prowess. Hischier, Backlund, Lindholm, and Cirelli barely or didn't even crack the top-20. Thomas put up 86 points while averaging 2:00 ATOI on the PK and carrying heavy ES defensive responsibilities for the Blues, but only ends up 25th in voting. It feels like the voters just picked sexy names from big markets for the top 15 this year and called it a day.


It's also really disappointing that Backlund only received two votes. He led all Flames forwards in PK time by a significant margin, his 67% d-zone starts were the highest that he's ever had and was tops in the league for forwards, and he was 19th among centers in ES minutes while taking the toughest match-ups each night. Somehow he still managed to pull off good advanced stats. He's so criminally underrated by league pundits.

If you can hold the other teams best players with a small minus you are doing a great job. You aren’t expected to outscore them.

And =/- is an exceptionally flawed stat.

Technically, every NHL player is a "nominee" for all the awards for their position.
