I do too... I just don't know his NHL comparable. Phaneuf with better hockey IQ? Poor man's Giordano? McDonagh minus the skating?

My comparison is Hjalmarsson, good all-around ability, good size and a bit of mean.

I think the Flames should draft his teammate Gavrikov this year. At the world juniors he was Russia's top Dman and that blueline had guys like Rafikov, Provorov, and Valiev. They could make the NA jump at the same time

Good read on Gavrikov from before last draft where he was passed over. Says he was D partners with Rafikov and that his nickname is now "Flame"

Agreed, Gavrikov is worth gambling a 2nd or 3rd round pick on. I really liked his play in the WJC.

I'm all for taking Gavrikov with our 3rd (76th overall). Bunch of undersized D and 4th liners around that range anyway and would rather use the pick on him. Can develop chemistry with fellow prospect Rafikov, probably stays the 2 years with Yaroslavl him too and will make the transition to North America smoother for both.
Plus, the last names and all. It'd be funny if one wore #2 and the other wore #22.

Hmm... anyone read Russian?
From the gist of google translate, there is a rumor that Lokomotiv might release Rafikov
http://www.championat.com/hockey/art...-19062015.html
edit: after putting it through another translator, it reads that Lokomotiv might be trading a bunch of their young defencemen because they have little chance of cracking their roster

And his whole reason for staying is to play there. Maybe he comes over early

Yep didn't he say that he really wanted to play there or felt he owed them something, I cannot remember exactly, but if he gets traded to another team you would think that he feels he doesn't owe the new team anything and feels that the jump to NA would be better for him.
Would there be room for him in Stockton??

He won't be able to jump to NA while he still has a vaild KHL contract, the IIHF won't allow it.
He would have to buyout his own contract or get the team to terminate/ agree to let him come to North America.
My understanding is that he has a pretty low value contract and if another team trades for him, I doubt they are going to just let him walk away from it.

Thats a kick in the nads for Rafikov I think. The way he talked about playing for Lokomotiv sounded like it meant more than the world to him. Will be interesting to see how this story unfolds here in the near future.

Rafikov played his first ever KHL game today for Lokomotiv
+1 2SOG 2 PIMs 11:28 TOI 11 shifts
He was 8th in ice time among defencemen on Lokomotiv (Yes they dressed 8 d-men)
Interesting note: Former Flame Steffan Kronwall is the captain of Rafikov's team.

On the surface, that doesn't look right. 8 d-men, and he was 8th in ice time at 11:28? How much did 1-7 get?

Do they have bigger rosters in Russia? that's a little odd to have 4 defense pairings.

I know in some (all) international games teams are allowed to dress 20 skaters. Canada usually goes with 13 forwards and 7 defencemen but the Russians are known for playing in 5 man units so they dress 12 forwards (4 lines) and 8 defencemen (4 pairs). Maybe this is how it goes in the KHL as well.

One other thing I forgot to mention. It looks like Dave King is no longer head coach of Lokomotiv been replaced by Alexei Kudashov.

I'll start building that behemoth then!
(I'll assume there is enough interest again to keep the prospect tracker going?)
