Wow, that is a great idea Hockeyguy. I may just do the same. Very smart.

Just hours after we reported that Apple appeared to have begun shipping out current-generation iPod nanos as replacements for recalled first-generation units, users are beginning to report in that they are indeed receiving the current models.

Just received our replacement today - Fedex truck pulled up late in the evening. Inside was our replacement for our 1st gen ipod nano that was sent into Apple 1 month ago.

It's a 6th generation ipod nano, serial number shows that warranty has expired. Not sure if that means that it's a refurbished model or if it's a brand new model and they've deactivated the warranty. It's silver.

Apple had initially been issuing refurbished first-generation models to replace the recalled first-generation units at risk of overheating. But it appears that the company has run out of spare first-generation units and is now supplying users with current-generation units as replacements.

Apple made a mistake with the first batch of empty boxes going back with Fedex. Kind of awesome they sent them all out in the two weeks before Christmas.

Yea... I didn't even think about reading the shipping label, and walking into UPS looking like a fool...

Apple updated my status saying they have received my nano on Christmas day, will have to wait and see how long it takes for the replacement to get here...

Just sent in two of them today, in separate packages, from two different addresses, with two different accounts. The real question is, what will I do with two new iPod nanos?

Donate them to someone who is less fortunate?

Just so you know, you do NOT get a whole new package. You get the Nano and nothing but the Nano. No cords, charger, headphones, guides or anything. The picture in FanIn80's post - that is everything.

So then give them the old USB adaptor and headphones. If you still had a first gen nano you probably still have the USB cord and headphones.

Got my replacement Nano yesterday. Black 6th Gen Nano. I sent my old Nano off to Apple between Christmas and New Year's. It was received and in "replacement pending" status since January 26. Two days ago I got a notification that the new product was shipping and I received it the next day.

They seem to be getting faster (perhaps as the initial rush has faded). I sent in a request, had the package to send it to Apple a couple of days later. I sent it back, and had the replacement (still one of the 6th generation Nanos) within a week. Trading in a 6+ year old 1 GB nano that was probably at the end of its useful life (I can't imagine the battery lasting that much longer) for a new 8 GB nano at no cost is a pretty good deal.
