Having Lindholm - Kadri - Backlund as your top 3 centres would create a lot of matchup problems for other teams.
If Stastny had interest in signing with the Flames I would not be surprised, he praised Sutter a lot after the Jets season ended. He's a really smart player, I just worry about his speed.

If Stastny is slow then Monahan moves at the speed of smell.
Hopefully though the surgery proves to be successful and Sean can come back and contribute....he deserves to as he's busted his busted ass for years and i for one have only seen another flame try so hard (Tanev) ....outside of that to play that hurt and still actually contribute is pretty awe inspiring .

No interest in Rask.
One guy I’d pursue is Roy from Vegas.

Rask has never been a strong skater. But he scored 44 points in 101 games over his last two seasons while being pretty darn strong in his own end.
For sub-$1m, I'd have interest.

Yeah that sounds about right. Would this or Stastny be the better pick up though? I feel a Stastny siging would be more beneficial if they have that push.

There are about 4 or 5 other free agents sitting on their hands right now, who would be good for similar production, be available for close to league minimum, that I would take over Rask.

Sure, there is no shortage of suitable options out there.
Which is why I still can't quite grasp exactly why the Flames felt the need to give Rooney $1.3 million for two years on the first day of the UFA market.

Someone see's something in him. Same questions were asked about Gudbranson types also. Rooney seems ready for the next step, if not, so be it. Really makes it feel like Treliving has all his rods in the fire also. Maybe Rooney could be the push against Ruzicka needs for the next step. Young guy battle. I like it.

Meh, Rooney is already 29 and was one of the worst offensive and defensive players in the league last year.
I can understand giving him a shot to maybe rediscover some of his OK suppression results from his time with the Devils but I have no idea why it cost so much. Even at his best, he's been a fourth-line guy ... and this isn't a Gudbranson case where teams are trying to unlock some high draft pedigree.
There are significantly better players available two weeks into free agency. Guys like Heinen and Donato are signing for less.

I think the team did a ton of research into cheap bottom guys to fill out the roster with the plan of Gaudreau and Tkachuk making a big chunk of the cap. Even though we didn’t sign Gaudreau they must have still definitely saw something in him they liked and kept that part of the plan.

I don't doubt they saw something they liked, but the Flames haven't exactly had a great track record of success when acquiring depth guys like Rooney.
Ritchie, Pitlick, Lewis, Nordstrom, Simon, Rinaldo ... a lot of real bad bets on that list. I know there are many who like Lewis, and I don't mind him, but he just got absolutely crushed at 5-on-5 last year.
Even if guys like Rodrigues or Milano aren't willing to come here, just give Ruzicka some more leash. You can get guys like Rooney on waivers.

I don't get it, but it is the most Flames thing ever.
In the interview with Rooney, he said that the Flames offered him a contract before when he was a free agent, but he chose NY. There is something they really like about him obviously.
Having said that, I thought the same thing when they signed Lewis the first time, but I came to appreciate what he brings.

Stastny is a guy I wished the Flames would have targeted had Monahan done the right thing and disclosed his season ending injury prior to the deadline. Gaping hole on this team is 2C as Backs isn’t that guy and we have to stop pretending he is. Very good 3C but not a 2C.
If we can make space (and I think it’s time to move on from Monahan and Lucic), maybe we can get Stastny on a short term deal. Neutral on Milano, he’s bounced around and not getting qualified is a red flag. There was that incident with AJ Greer so maybe not the best character guy. Rodrigues benefitted from increased minutes on Pens with Malkin out, don’t see him repeating those numbers.
If Stastny isn’t available, maybe a guy like Henrique would fit bill. Played well with mangiapane at worlds. Schmalz would be fantastic but probably too much to acquire. Still think Montreal might want to do something. Dvorak perhaps? And as a total wildcard, since Chicago is trading everyone, maybe a guy like Kurashev.

Flames pro scouting in general has been really bad when it comes to forwards. Outside of Lindholm and Frolik, very few hits over the years signing or trading for forwards. Coleman is okay but the back half of his contract is likely going to be an issue for the team.

Nordstrom was good at what he was signed to do. Kill penalties, check, skate very fast. Sutter loved him.
