Pitching wise I'm not sure that this is the type of trade deadline that Blue Jays fans expected when Atkins talked about accountability when he canned Montoyo. The team is better but everyone else around them is also better (some seem a lot better).
At the same time, I'm pretty sure Tanner fricking Roark could have gotten a team's 5th best prospect at this deadline so they didn't mortgage the future for a moderately better present.
The Merrifield trade came in when I was writing this. Interesting.

Is Whit Merrifield even allowed into the country? Wasn't there a whole thing where he said he wouldn't get vaccinated to play for a different team but he would if it meant making the playoffs or something incredibly stupid like that?

I guess they wanted some Springer insurance. Someone who can comfortably handle CF but isn’t also a total black hole in the lineup like Zimmer.
Hopefully this spells the end of the Bradley Zimmer era.

I like the idea of Merrifield. Can't have the current set of bench guys playing at all.

Merrifield had a good career but on a sharp decline. At least still brings some speed to the lineup and a somewhat OK bat. Slightly below average.
Excited about White. The more I read the more I think we will be happy with that trade.

Well, if that’s it - Jays did OK. Not great but OK.
B- grade from me. Bullpen shored up nicely which was the main weakness, but was really hoping for some major splash. I guess with lots more buyers this year the competition was harder and the prices higher.
We still have Moreno, Martinez, Zulueta, and Tiedemamn leaving us in good position for next seasons trade negotiations.

Our next home game is on the 12th. It will be interesting to see if Merrifield has to wait to cross the border. I believe you need to have had 14 days since your vaccine to cross the border.

Agreed, they added to their bull pen, however I don't believe they accomplished enough to make a push in the playoffs
Pitching is still an area of weakness....

It seems like Atkins has essentially conceded that this is not a year where we are going to likely be World Series contenders. We are going to make the playoffs but aren’t likely going to be good enough to push past a single round.
