Picked up the Xbox as part of the Black Friday deal along with trading in an old system for a $100 credit (so the Xbox was sub $250).
Really impressed thus far. Forza H2 looks better than any game I've seen yet, and the live-action intro video gave me chills as a racing nerd.
Didn't get the Kinect so I can't comment.
The install/update time problems are real. Took 20-30 minutes of installs and updates just to get Forza going. Still, much ado about nothing. If you can't be patient and get over it, then you're probably a little nit picky. Apparently it updates things while it sleeps, so hopefully it only ever happens when I pop in a new game.
Either way, glad I got it. PS4 is still going to be my main machine for most things, but the differences between the two are (of course) exaggerated for effect.
Since the initial update when I bought the Xbox one system before christmas last year and the game install updates I haven't seen another update while I'm actually using the console (might be unnoticed in the background). Fifa updated the other day while I was outside the games as with all the other updates. I also had the digital version of Fifa pre-ordered and I believe it downloaded over night so it was there to play when I fired up the machine in the morning (I think, I don't remember having to wait at all).
Given we run the TV through the console and it is one for several hours a day gaming or not we have had very few issues with it (freezing, needing a hard reboot etc). Far less than with any console I've ever owned. Quite shocked to be honest given the 360 issues early on (though I was one of the ones who has a launch 360 still going strong).
I have instructed all potential gift givers if they are thinking of getting games to just get me xbox giftcards because quite frankly I prefer the digital versions of games. I've never sold any of my used games so re-sale isn't a factor in my purchasing decision.
Are you going to Playstation Experience Chemgear, seems like something up your alley?
Heh, I wish I could but work is busy and I've got some other trips planned for next year. Thinking I should make it to a PAX at some point, so 2015 is as good as time as any. Pretty neat that they're doing this in the December "offseason" for the public. All their worldwide studios and a crap ton of indie developers.
However, if anybody is up for Vegas in December and has more free time than me, you can get tickets here. Just be sure to take pictures and tell us all about it!
*sigh*. I'm losing the battle on resisting getting a PS4. I was planning on waiting until Final Fantasy Type-0 comes out, but GTA V and NHL 15 are calling me. Even if the latter is still crap.

You won't regret it as it's a much better console than the PS3. Make sure you do yourself a favor and get an extra controller as the battery life is crap.

At least you can recharge them. I totally forgot about the Xbox One controller still needing AA batteries, so now I need to go out and buy another charging pack accessory if I don't want to be buying batteries for the next decade

I get around that on the PS3 by plugging the USB into my laptop that lives on my coffee table.

I'm not finding any problems with the battery. There's been nights when my buddy and I played diablo for for almost 8 hours and I still had battery life left, never got the low bat notification. Even some nights I play for close to 6 hours and nothing.
I didn't get my ps4 on release day, didn't get mine till summer so maybe they changed things up a bit, but I've had no issues with the battery life.
Granted it's not the 6 or 7 days I got with the ps3 one, so I guess in comparison the battery isn't as good. Perspective
