We had our coolant freeze in one of our vehicles during the February 2019 cold snap. It was relatively uneventful. If you're worried all you need to do is keep your block heater plugged in. That was enough to thaw ours out.

Problem is I have 5 cars so not practical to plug them all in. Good to know coolant shrinks when super cold didn't know that. I have two bottles of washer fluid out in the open gonna see if they freeze.

A lot of people like to quote windchills as an exaggeration of the temperature, which is a peeve of my pedantic self. "It was minus FORTY!". No it wasn't. It was -29 and windy.

But these are actual temperatures and are quite extreme, even for around here.

Incredibly rare in the last 23 years:

For Calgary, it’s even more rare. Just once since the year 2000 has it had a daytime high of -30°C, recorded on Jan. 27, 2004. The 20th century had 56 instances of a daytime high at or below -30°C, for reference.

I wonder what's the hold up on Environment Canada issuing an Extreme Cold warning for Calgary? Some agencies need that issued to get certain things started.

Hopefully this short term cold will kill the annoying pests like insects for some longer term gain come the spring. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

It's not cold enough for long enough yet.
