Welcome to the new math of the entertainment industry. If you work really hard to build an audience of tens of thousands, you can make dozens or even hundreds of dollars.
If anyone needs me, I'll be out spending my Spotify royalties on half a cup of coffee.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing either. The benefit & point of analytics is simply more information about the game.
If people use it to inform their comprehension of the game and in turn their opinion, AND most importantly enable learning by admitting when they are wrong…
They generally improve their understanding of the game.
If they’re an analyst, they improve their ability to communicate that understanding to others.
Clowns like Spector & Staples are frightened by analytics because of their insecure egos. So they denigrate them whenever they can to protect their Oiler turf.
Scotty Bowman took the time to understand, appreciate and regularly use them. But we all know Spec & David are smarter than Scotty.
The problem is compensating this understanding.
Outside of Edmonton no one wants to consistently listen to media spout their baseless uninformed opinions. The Fan regularly cheaped out on hosts doing exactly this. Several times it was like eavesdropping on two idiots at a sports bar.
It doesn’t have to be all numbers and data either. Artfully use analytics to form & communicate insight and more importantly, give color to the nuances of the game that people love to debate.
But doing all this requires a modicum of critical thinking capacity. Unless a person loves the work enough to persevere through crap pay… their critical thinking skills are generally compensated better in almost any other industry.

Great guests and I appreciate his dour sense of humor more now than in my younger days. This is definitely a podcast that has helped fill my void created by the struggles of Fan 960.
Also, it really highlights how the interviewer/host has the ability to make a lot of topics interesting. He covers a pretty wide range of stuff. Typically I didnt care for Baseball/Golf and other topics when they would come on the radio, but with him hosting it, it makes it a bit more interesting and doesnt usually lose my interest.

I still find McCown extremely irritating (never understood why he was so popular in the east) but at least he has John Shannon on there to mitigate things.
However, the podcast has some good guests - the episode from Aug 1 actually talks about the decline of sports radio. Toronto focused, but it's a fairly interesting listen, especially for someone like me who has fond memories of listening to Rome in the morning and then Joe Sports and Rob Kerr in the afternoons.

It's his schtick and it's intentional to get people angry to drive engagement.
Quote:
I decided the character would be the obnoxious know-it-all: “I’m smarter than you, you’re too dumb to even engage me in conversation.” I figured this out on the weekend. Monday night I went on, I was a completely different guy. I was yelling and screaming, I had opinions on everything, and the phones started to ring. Then I started yelling at callers, and I would hang up on them. “I just wanna ask you one question before I hang up on you: How did you manage to dial the telephone while in a straitjacket?” Click.
I had a whole slew of lines for all these people, so I became the obnoxious #######. And guess what? Ratings went way up.

This quote was referring to how he started back in '92. I think it doesn't play as well to newer listeners who like their media people to be down to earth, relatable and more like them than the old generation who had/has reverence for people who are on TV & radio.

Sometimes it’s interesting to hear about the host’s girlfriend percentage.

You find Shannon the non irritating one and McCown the irritating one?

Not sure what his income is from it, but McCown is also on Sirius XM.

About the lone positive amidst 960's demise, Sandra Prusina has been excellent for the afternoons. She was away for a few days, but she's done a great job when she's been on.

Every ex is either someone you were tired of or someone who was tired of you, and neither is interesting to anyone who isn’t you.
IMO, anyway.

The two baseball jokers in the morning are unlistenable.
Blair and Barker. It’s like listening to Stadler and Waldorf.

Baseball is good for movies but IRL it's really not great.
A lot of wasted time for a few good moments. And not even sure they're worth it. One of those sports that is more fun for the players than the casual spectator. The rosters are massive and games really drag out. So much standing around. It takes away from the impressiveness the sport for me. Whereas hockey is an all out war by comparison.
BB broadcasts are good for pointless background noise though.
But all the power to those that enjoy it and attending Dawgs games. I used to go to see the Cannons. Great way to catch up with family/friends cause you only need to pay attention sparingly.

Never listen this morning but I assume Nault is done now, not that I really enjoyed his presence on the station but the ongoing exodus continues. In a matter of 2 months the station has lost quite a lot of talent.

I hate to crap on radio people but these two may be the cure for insomnia. It's the worst thing 960 has ever put on.
