Thank goodness he pulled through because there were large parts of the match where Diallo was pretty sloppy. This should've been an easier win for the big guy.
Thank goodness Sousa is also a fair bit past his best (hence the nickname) and this result was looking in a bit of doubt for a little bit but Diallo persisted just enough to break Sousa at the end of set 2 and from then on Big Gabe played much better for the rest of the match to take it with relatively less fuss the rest of the way.

Czechia has just now defeated the States at the BJK Cup which means they'll be taking on Canada on Saturday. I don't really see Heidi making any changes to a winning lineup thus Marina and Leylah should get the call for the two singles matches. If I were to guess for Czechia, I think they would go with Noskova and Vondrousova (Bouzkova is also available).

Last reported injury was a stress facture in her back that caused her to miss the US Open. I think she then decided to just take the rest of the year off and hopefully heal up in time for the start of the 2024 season.

Liam Draxl picks a great time to break as he takes the opening set 7-5.

Big Gabe posts a nice win as he makes mincemeat of Dougaz 6-3 6-2.
Draxl looking good to make it 2 for 2 for the good guys as he's leading Montes de la Torre 4-0 in set 3!

Watching the Draxl match and I don't know what happened to Inaki between sets 2 and 3, but he's totally lost the plot.
Edit: Liam joins Gabriel in the semi-finals with a 7-5 5-7 6-1 win

From my viewpoint it looked like Inaki ran out of his energy reserve after coming back to win set 2 and was too cooked to stay competitive after that.
Liam was laser focused in the deciding set and hardly made any basic or silly error at all. Just moving the Spainard all over the court and then pouncing on a short reply or eventually forcing an error.
Both Liam and Big Gabe look like they have tough semifinal matches coming up. Diallo faces Dominik Koepfer who is pretty much a regular ATPer now and has a super solid game. Liam meanwhile has some guy named Andres Martin who has been playing at an unreal level in this tournament (probably an unsustainable level for the Yank). So hopefully Liam will maintain this level he's been showing for this match.

Yeah, is Koepfer defending some points because I figured he would have been playing in Metz or Sofia this week. Gabriel will need to serve very well to take down the German.
Edit: Just checked because I was thinking Koepfer has won Calgary in the past, sure enough it was last year.

Yeah. ATP site says Koepfer is defending 80 points.

Marina is down a set and a break to Krejcikova. Unlike the match against Frech, this one is going to be very tough to come back from.

Krejcikova wins 6-2 6-1 and played an excellent match versus Marina. The young kid has a bright future in my opinion, needs to improve that second serve and the forehand needs to be cleaned up, the backhand is already world class.

Now we turn to Leylah to keep Canada's hopes alive. She's taking on the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

Meanwhile, Adrian Mannarino at the ripe old age of 35 has just won his 3rd ATP title in 2023 in Sofia. Some crazy good tennis this season from the Frenchman.

Leylah saves a handful of break points in the opening game to hold serve, then breaks in the very next game. Off to a fast start.
Edit: Big hold now just now by Leylah as Marketa had retrieved one of those breaks.

Leylah breaks to take the opening set 6-2. Excellent tennis from Leylah, she needs to keep up the aggression, her forehand is causing Marketa all kinds of trouble thus far.

Uh oh, the Leylah serving gremlins have returned. That and Marketa has really upped her game early in set 2.
Edit: Going to a 3rd and deciding set for the doubles to mean anything. Come on Leylah!!

Leylah needs a hold or a break to make the doubles the decider.
