Sometimes this idea rattles around in my head and reminds me of my arguments on the Doug Gilmour trade.
Calgary won the DG trade because they got players who would play on the ice and internal budget relief in exchange for a guy was never setting foot on CGY ice as a Flame again.
CGY won the Tkachuk trade because we got 3 guys who will play for a long time in CGY for a guy who was out the door.

This thread reeks of bitter, jilted, insecure Flames tears. The guy wanted out after he spent 6 years here - it happens with most players on most teams.
Personally I'm more concerned why we have so many d breakdowns in a game, why our number 1 goalie is a mess and re-finding the identity on this team.

I am not overly worried right now with this trade. I am more than comfortable giving Huberdeau and Weegar the season to get themselves sorted. All the off season moves that the team had to pivot and make were to help them in a series. Playoffs and how the team does there is where it matters. As rocky as it has been, I still think this is a playoff team.

Yeah don't think Gilmour was coming back.
But to throw in reliable veterans who loved Calgary to the extent that the team loses every single player vs player match up in a line by line analysis? How do you screw it up that badly?
Had better be budget plus!
Doug Gilmour > Gary Leeman
Jamie Macoun > Michel Petit
Rick Wamsley > Jeff Reese
And then the less comparable ...
Kent Manderville
Ric Nattress
Craig Berube
Alexander Godynyuk
#6 defenseman vs top of class enforcer ... Calgary wins?
neither prospect really turned out.

That's kind of been the theme here since summer. It's a shame as we would laugh at Oilers fans for behaving this way but it is what it is.

I always argue that that trade was all about money and what the Flames were not willing to pay. Gilmour went from $500K to $1m per year with TO. Nattress left a year later to double his salary. TO doubled Macoun's salary. Wamsley was the only one who didn't double his salary.
It was essentially $2.23M out for $1.23M in (not including the prospects).

No they didn’t win the Doug Gilmour trade no matter how you spin it
As the matter of fact they were embarrassed
You could justify the Tkachuk trade but not the Gilmour trade
Also the guy going out the door still has plenty of value

What kind of a so-called superstar takes 41 games to figure out how to score with his new team? I'm kinda tired of waiting already. It's time to do something. 10 games ago!

Moving goalposts. I’m sure we’ll see that changed at some point to see how he does in season 2. That being said he is a ppg player lately despite some flubs. I think the problem is not that he’s been awful it’s just he’s been average and we’re expecting more.

Maybe I am just looking for the offence and being blinded but if you asked me if Huberdeau was good defensively I would have said middle road. Stats vs untrained eye test lol

Not looking to dispel the Huberdeau defensive story, but he's on the ice for good results, doesn't necessarily mean he's doing it.
Can't be hurting them though.

I certainly am surprised at that! I still want to see a lot more scoring from him but those defensive metrics are very impressive.

Also look at those market values
Offensive numbers are less that what we hoped so far but if you took Huberdeau and Weegar out of the Flames lineup and added Tkachuk they would be worse 100%
Compare the record to last year if you want... Markstrom had a .920 last season

Tkachuk could score 200 points this year and it wouldn’t bother me. Calgary has a better record than Florida and is 2-0 against the Panthers this year. That’s all I care about.
I’d rather have an 80 point Huberdeau in the playoffs than a 120 point Tkachuk in 9th place.

You know, the Flames are currently in 9th place, and their record was identical to Florida's until last night.

Yeah i think you have to have this mindset when looking at defensive metrics in less than half a season.
Is Huberdeau a good defensive player? I'm not ready to say yes but they are not bleeding chances when he is on the ice.

I would rather have the younger, better player for the next 9 years. Then have the GM build around that player to make a contender.
What we would rather have doesn't matter at this point. This trade is a hard one to judge, because on one hand, it had to happen. Tkachuk was going to leave after 1 year and this was likely the best deal that could happen given the circumstances. On the other hand, there is the old saying that the team who gets the best player, wins the trade regardless of the other parts. In this case, I think Florida made out better and took advantage of our misfortune. That is debatable of course. Some people might think Huberdeau is better, I just personally don't feel that way. Factor in age and likely production over the next 8.5 seasons, and I don't think it will be close by the time both contracts end.
Also have to keep in mind that it wasn't the only big change made. The current situation is not just based on the Tkachuk/Huberdeau trade, so we can't fault this trade specifically for the woes.
