I believe he has two full seasons in the NHL and is 22. To meet the 27/7 he needs another five years. So six years would only buy one UFA year.

If you look at his production he does warrant a deal closer to $7 million but that's only going to make it harder to sign Marner who's going to get $7+ million and then Matthews who's going to expect as much or more than Tavares. I imagine their Stanley Cup window is right now.

I don't think losing one player from their core will close their window.
Chicago showed us that losing players after a Stanley Cup win doesn't close your window as long as you an elite core.
And Chicago seemingly lost good players every year for awhile.

No because Nylander is already better than those guys.

I am willing to wager that Nylander does not get more than 40 points this season.

Yes, I would consider it. We would be trading from a position of weakness (one of our top pair D) to address a position of strength (another top 6 winger, this one in a contract dispute). It isn't just about getting value in a trade. I think that trade would make us worse in the short term and give us big cap issues in the mid term. And if you aren't making us better short term / long term then there isn't much point, regardless of the perceived value you gain in the trade.
Its moot now anyway, and probably always was.

Leaf fans like to tell others that Nylander can play center. If we could fleece the Leafs like that we could then potentially move a forward for a D at some point but I agree it is a moot point the Flames are not after Nylander

Insider trading:

Sense is that there is optimism in the air after back to back meetings between Nylander's agent and Kyle Dubas
It is at a crucial juncture, doesn't mean a deal will get done. Both short term and long term contracts are being discussed.
Lebrun still thinks there is a gap.
McKenzie shoots down all the trade speculation about Nylander after Dubas was seen at the Flames/Rangers and Avs/Flyers games.
He says trading Nylander is something the Leafs aren't even considering right now.
It might be something they look at way way way down the road.
Dubas was in NY to meet with Nylander's agent and was in Philly to watch a game. Case Closed.
Too big of a long shot for the Jets to move Trouba midseason as he is too valuable to them.
Focus is on winning.
Avs wanted to sign Rantanen to an extension this past summer but Agent Mike Liut told them they were in no hurry.
Liut also represents Laine.
It seems that Liut prefers to wait until the ELC is done before negotiating a new deal
Some are speculating John Stevens could be the first coach to be fired but don't believe that will be the Blake's first move
Some speculation that Alec Martinez is a trade possibility

Good on players like Matthews, Laine and Rantanen. And pretty much 90% of all star players. But jeeze, knowing you could sign a guaranteed 50M+ year deal today and be set for life but hold off because you want to make 70M+. I get it, but huge gamble that could cost you everything with one bad hit.

It's going to be more than one player though and they haven't got out of the first round of the playoffs yet. Kapanen is also due a big raise from $860k. Their defense isn't good with Gardiner who's likely going to free agency. They are probably going to have to deal a forward for a top 4 defensman just to replace Gardiner in the offseason. A lot will hinge on how much Matthews wants as it's possible he asks for McDavid money.

Because Shanahan has spoken about taking a small pay hit to build a legacy - even without him. Do it for the Leafs!

Philadelphia Flyers Trade?
I see there is an Eklund Rumour that the Leafs are after Travis Sanheim, he's a 22 year old left shooting RD.

With the Kings spiralling at an enormous, aging cap hit, does anyone think Quick becomes available late this season or off season?

Doughty's 11M/yr contract hasn't even kicked in yet. Kopitar's signed for the next 6 years. They aren't going to be throwing in the towel so quickly. So no, I don't think so.

I don’t think they’ll throw in the towel at all, but I wonder if they restructure. They’re built to JUST get to the playoffs, but I don’t know how long they’ll be happy to miss the playoffs or go out in the first round. And they are OLD. Just because Doughty and Kopitar are signed long term doesn’t mean they’re in fighting shape as a team. They’ve got to make some changes, somewhere.
Outside of Doughty, their defence is pretty bad for what they’re paid. Maybe they look at moving a forward, but I could see Quick moving if they can get a younger goalie at half the price.

I think Quick is obviously better than Elliot but I always worry that goaltenders who have played the majority of their careers behind air tight defensive teams have been propped up a little and won’t be the same guy on teams that are leakier defensively.

Why get Quick when we have Quick Jr in waiting.
