I rarely look but this conversation has caused me to look and I’m down a couple hundred Twitter followers. I’m not leaving.

Is it either / or?
It seems like most entities will do both for the time being to see how this plays out.
Over time I'd suspect that these will become defined communities, with twitter filling a niche and some other platform (maybe threads, maybe something else) filling a different niche.
I think it will only become either/or if consumers demand brands / influencers only be on one - which isn't far fetched tbh. unfortunately that will further echo chambers and misinformation.

It can be both. I’ve also registered on Tribal but haven’t used it at all.

I don't know what niche Twitter will have left if a critical mass leaves. I guess the remaining Musk fanboys? It's not like the right has flocked to Twitter and are out buying Teslas. Musk has managed to turn both ends of the spectrum against him.

Day 1 growth stats don't mean much to me considering that they're just bringing people over from Instagram. If Threads were released as a new feature inside Instagram and they had 0.2% of users try it out on the first day, would anyone care?
The question will be if they can get people to stick, and so far the user experience from my pov is awful. Not only are there huge problems with the feed (why is it my professional account can't get industry info in its feed but has a feed full of trash influencers and celebrities?), but there is a huge problem with discoverability of both interesting users and of content related to specific topics. Search basically doesn't work, and there is no alternative to hashtags. It's awful so far.
Also, while they're now making some noise about be part of the fediverse and allowing ownership of your social graph (which is great), does anyone really trust Meta to pursue this approach far beyond their attempt to draw users off of competing platforms?

LOL, just gonna grab everything. Cool? Cool. One of the many reasons to never have a Meta account, and threads isn't going to change my mind on that.

People use their real names on twitter? I've been on there since 2009 and have been using a fake handle the entire time haha. Using it the same way one uses Facebook/Insta doesn't really sound fun, at least not the way I use it. That's why it's the only social media app I regularly use, I like the anonymity.

IDK, Zuck already had all the data with Insta and Facebook and so did Twitter. That comment is a bit rich coming from @Jack.
So far Threads is pretty interesting -- they've definitely growth-hacked the hell out of the first stage so now we get to see where it goes. I doubt it will be perfect and Zuck is just another billionaire desperate for more power, but if they can avoid some of the big traps of past social networks (tribalism, hate-mongering) it might just turn into something interesting.

Threads apparently does not want hard news or politics on their platform. Don't think I can embed threads yet, but here is the text from Messari, who is head of Instagram:
Quote:
The goal isn't to replace Twitter. The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter.
Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads - they have on Instagram as well to some extent - but we're not going to do anything to encourage those verticals.
|
Quote:
Politics and hard news are important, I don't want to imply otherwise. But my take is, from a platform's perspective, any incremental engagement or revenue they might drive is not at all worth the scrutiny, negativity (let's be honest), or integrity risks that come along with them.
There are more than enough amazing communities – sports, music, fashion, beauty, entertainment, etc – to make a vibrant platform without needing to get into politics or hard news.

Less town square, more shopping mall.
It will certainly have an appeal to brands and people who just want to sell stuff. No reason that can't work, but not sure a text-driven platform is most appealing for it.

My hunch is it will be an attempt to reinvent Facebook for the under 40's

Of all the things I don't understand about Twitter, the fact that your say you have thousands (?) of followers... under your real name... is definitely one of them. I could understand if you were posting as "God" or "Strombone1" or "BoringSeanMonahan"... but as yourself? Come on!!
