Obviously this is how flames fans see things. The team is great, right on the cusp, why wouldn't you want to coach them?

Let's assume a top coaching candidate in the NHL feels the same way, that competing for spots 11-7 is where the team is at and they are willing to spend money (on players like brouwer and stajan but I digress).

Are there not rosters dotted around the league in the same boat? Are the Flames the only team in the league with promise right now?

Is the only thing the Flames can offer over Detroit is that in the last two years they both have the same amount of playoff wins? It's not a very enticing offer if I'm being honest.

I'd much rather go to Dallas for instance, a team that will likely be looking for a new coach this offseason.

But let's say it's only Detroit that's out there.

It's Calgary or Detroit.

Yes, I am almost certainly going to be joining the Detroit organization and their winning history, stable ownership and fancy new building over the Flames and their rumblings of relocation, higher cost of living and higher taxes. I am probably not going to join the organization where I would be the third coach in four years where my predecessors were both canned with term remaining on their deals.

Well back to reality. What likely to be available coach are we worried would thumb his nose at Calgary? AV? I highly doubt Quenneville will be available but if his going rate is $xmillion, and Flames offer that, he'd look for something else?

If Flames are not willing to pay market value for an established coach, that is a different story.

If this fictional coach has a family, there is no way he picks Detroit over Calgary or any city in the NHL for that matter (except Edmonton) But this is a silly thing to discuss.

You know that the US is a ridiculous country that offers two completely different experiences for the wealthy vs the "peasants" eh?

You have no money and living in Detroit is basically third world, you have millions of dollars and living just outside downtown Detroit is as beautiful, safe and great for a family as anywhere in North America.

It's a big reason why their country has been falling apart, but on the bright side, if you're wealthy you can live behind a gate, away from the crumbling concrete of failing capitalism!

It would be awesome if this could not become another anti US thread.

Oh man...that ship has sailed.

Didnt you know? The Trials and Tribulations of Glen Gulutzan!

Not limited to the performance of the Calgary Flames he is now involved in the downfall of Capitalism, Western Society as a whole and word is that in the off-season hes looking at storming Cuba.

Presumably for the lulz.

He is an industrious fellow.

If it's not that, then I don't see any special draw from Detroit. Unless he wants to start at a team that's at set 1 of a rebuild and wants to live in a city where he can take his grandkids out to see urban gentrification.

Why not? Seems like a pretty good place to be to get paid and not work.

Seriously, no-one thinks about that. What they consider is the opportunity and the money. If the two of those line up they take it, if they don't, they look elsewhere.

No one has considered that the ownership here might be doing something...deliberate. (Given that KK is still in place, this is a solid thought to me.)

Haha, lucky there is no NHL team in Saskatchewan, or else we have a lot to anti about. For example, the fans in Calgary bitch and whine about coaching on a message board, at least they don't dump this

on their driveway.

Sorry, it's been too depressing after a loss.

Found this interesting...

In testimony for a discrimination case former UMD women ice hockey coach Shannon Miller says she has been invited to apply for a position with the Calgary Flames after this season:

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/new...RD4NyY.twitter

Quote:
Miller told jurors that she was particularly disappointed in UMD's decision because she had turned down head coaching positions at five other colleges during her tenure, rejecting a higher salary to stay with the program she had built.

She testified that she has been unable to find work since being let go and filing suit. She said she has applied for about 50 openings for men's and women's college hockey coaches, national team coaches and athletic directors.

She said she was seriously considered to head the Chinese national team and has sent her resume to every National Hockey League team, having discussions with four and earning an invitation to apply for a position with the Calgary Flames after this season.

Regarding the fictional coach choosing between Detroit and Calgary, I'm not sure lower taxes would move the needle when being paid in US dollars in a Canadian city you get the FX lift?

Could be wrong but that's a 20% premium right there to take a Canadian market.

The counties in greater Detroit where the wealthy live are nicer than anywhere in Alberta. The rich in big American cities neither notice nor care how the poor live because they live in enclaves untouched by urban decay. Do you think the families of NHL coaches are riding around on public transit, and going to public schools in inner city Detroit? Nik Lidstrom cares so much about his family that he seriously considered leaving the NHL in the 90s so he could raise his kids in Sweden. Instead, he found an exclusive county in Michigan agreeable enough that he and his family stayed another 15 years.

The sort of experienced coaches people here want next do not just go where the money and opportunity lie. And i agree with Flash - the coaching carousel here will scare away those who are just as interested in their reputation as anything else (and that is probably a characteristic for each of Q, AV, DS, etc etc).

As i noted elsewhere - the other reason Calgary only attracts retreads and rookies is the travel - so much harder to coach in a market where you are on the road as much as Calgary is - as compared to say an eastern team in a division where you can practice in your own facilities more often.

gulutzan may not be around next year, but i would expect someone like Dave Lowry or another assistant coach to come here in a promotion.

Well it's pretty much all been said a 100 times. I truly have no idea if Gulutzan is a good coach. Some of his decisions are strange but every fan base will quibble with a coach's deployment decisions. Most of the disappointment this year rests on the players and the makeup of the team but there is no way you can go into next year without some major changes.

And I just don't see management banking on this coach while making major roster changes. Just way too big a risk.

So he's a goner unless ownership has given up on the whole situation. Hope that's not the case.

It would not shock me at all if both GG AND Brouwer are back next year.

How many coaches do they let Tre fire, and how many contracts do they let him buy out? Between this year and next the flames will have paid lance bouma 1.5 million not to play for the Flames. That's real money. Are they going to pay more than a combined 3 million for Brouwer, Gulutzan and Bouma not to be with the team next year?

The more i think about it, a simple hockey ops decision to buyout brouwer might not be so simple for the Flames.

I mean, what if a new coach can get him going?

It's unlikely that they would be paying Gulutzan next year. It's been widely speculated that next year is a club option year for Gulutzan. If they choose not to pick up the option, I just hope they do it in a timely manner so he has a chance to search for assistant coaching jobs or maybe a HC spot in the AHL or Europe.

Yeah I think it’s quite possible we see Brouwer next year. Two years left on his contract.

Now if BT had a second round pick in this century I could see them trading it to get someone to take him off their hands.

Huh, that's an interesting wrinkle.

If it's a club option he's gone.
